Hi Martin,    Here are some more pictures to update you on my large scale lifeboat build.

These two pictures show the basic planking of the hull completed and ready for sheathing in grp. The multi coloured effect is caused by my use of balsa, black card and 2mm mdf to create this bottom layer to keep down the costs. This layer is not seen but is only to provide a support for the grp.

These two shots show the motor/running gear and the shaft oilers. The motors are Bosch windscreen wiper motors with the gearbox housing cut off. They run at approximatly 3500 at 12volts and are capable of swinging 100 mm diameter props without gearing and only pull 4 amps each at full load. The prop shafts are 20" long with the addition of an extra bearing in the middle. Also in these shots can be seen part of the permanent concrete ballast that will be covered by the floors in the hull (40lb of concrete to date!!).

This picture shows the other end of the running gear with its support in the starboard prop tunnel.

This picture shows the start of fitting out the survivors cabin viewed through the foredeck hatch.

This shows the survivors cabin as viewed from the engine room looking towards the bow. Now that the planking has been completed the only access to this cabin to complete the fitting out is through this doorway and the hatch in the foredeck.

The next major task is the grp coating of the hull and for that I need at least three days of good weather as I prefer to work outdoors when dealing with resin / glassfibre.

I will send more pictures as the build progresses.

  Regards,
     Mike Pendlebury (gribeauval)
