Here is a quick run down on how the rope system works during the launch of a Mersey Lifeboat The boat is on the carriage and the loose ends of the ropes are fitted to two hooks on the keel of the boat near to the props, The loose coils of rope are passed around two pulleys at the rear of the tractor.

When the boat is pushed into the water, at the appropriate depth the rig is stopped and the tow coupling is released on the carriage, at the same time the four hold down chains are released from the boat deck. On a signal from the coxswain the boat goes slowly ahead and the tractor reverses at full speed which pulls the rope tight and helps pull the boat off the carriage. When the boat reaches the end of the carriage the hooks release and the boat sails away. The ropes lock on the carriage and are now are used to pull the carriage out of the water and up the beach.

The two attached clips show the system in action.

I hope this explains the system for you.
