I got to wondering about the tractor and tracks for the lifeboat,
Mike explained it all to me using small words......!

Here is the method I used to make the non-powered caterpillar track units for the launching carriage and I will be using a similar method for the tracks for the Talus Tractor.

The basis for the tracks is a strip of hinges as used on lorry roller shutter doors ( Four 4ft lengths purchased at a car boot sale for the grand sum of £1 !! ).

These are measured to wrap around the wheels, and you hope that the distance is a whole section of hinge!, then you remove the appropriate pin and rejoin to make a loop. The treads, in this case marine birch ply, are made to fit between the hinge pin sections and using the existing holes are bolted into place with the excess length of bolt protruding inwards to act as guides. Rubber treads are glued to the outside surface as per the original and thus produce a non-driven caterpillar track. It sounds so simple after the fact but It took me weeks of pulling out my hair, what there is left!!!!, until I saw the hinge strips at the sale and the idea came in a blinding flash!!

Hope this explains the method, regards Mike
