Tiggie bliss
« on: June 14, 2010, 12:37:08 am »

Saturday was a bit of a blustery day here in sunny Norfolk but by late afternoon it abated.
'Teddy' had been giving the Tiger Moth the once over earlier inthe day and got it ready to take to the air. It was a fabulous evening, light but steady drift across the field, the only drawback being a take off into the sun but once airborne it was a blissful and relaxing hour at the controls. Just stooging around on quarter throttle, occasionally tweaking a trim here or there, the large reliable four stroke up  front running quietly and smoothly giving a sound re-assurance, truly a man is at peace with the world at moments like this. A truly relaxing evenings flying... wonderful.
The reason I'm going on like this is that this used to be my favourite pastime and one which has been sadly neglected for years due to work etc. I haven't flown anything properly for years but it never leaves you, a bit like riding a bike really.

The aircraft is a Greens Tiger Moth, 46" span , it normally takes a smaller engine than the 45 Saito special I have installed but this motor is perfect for it as it has more than sufficient torque which in turn means I have fitted a larger prop, it's more scalish and gives sufficient thrust on fast tickover to keep level flight. It is incredibly economic at these low rpm and the aircraft remains aloft for a full half hour on one tankful. As these were test flights I ran out of fuel on both occasions but made it back to the field 'dead stick',
nothing like it to sharpen up the old skills. I have to hand it to Teddy, he stuck with the kite all the way down, no sign of attempted bail out and was still checking out the instrument panel out long after he rolled to a standstill.

This is all a pre-cursor to putting my quarter scale Moth in the air, it has been languishing in my loft for long enough but I guess  work will keep me from it for some time yet.
Hmmmm, there I go dreaming again... ah well, back to work.

That is a beautiful plane and it looks wonderful in the air.
Teddy is very lucky, I haven't been up in a moth for over a quarter of century and definitely miss it.
I did spend a lot more time in the Piper Cub as it was cheaper to fly, but the moth was always more fun.

The Moth is my favourite, it looks and sounds just like everything I want in an aeroplane. I have flown the full size although i'm not a qualified pilot and it was a wonderful experience which i want to repeat at some point.I did fly an Auster T2 once and that was probablythe nicest monoplane I have tried.
These days I confine my flying to having my feet on the ground despite being urged to get a PPL. I'm going to fit a camera next as I want some stills and video footage from the aircraft. The video should be interesting as it's difficult to obtain smooth and level flight in most model aeroplanes so that will be my challenge. I think the quarter scale Moth will be a better option for on board video as it will be far less susceptible to vibration and a more stable machine.

Reading this has brought back so many happy memories! My last model was a Mighty Barnstormer from DB Models. 8 foot wingspan, an OS 90 4 stroke up front, sounded lovely and looked right as well. Had lots of fun with her, and taught many budding pilots with her too. Big, dolcile and very forgiving. gave them confidence to cope with their screaming 40 Trainers.! When RAF Laarbruch closed in '99, then I lost my Model and my Full Size Gliding at the same time. Flying with a German Club is financially not possible for me and the dreaded " Shaky hand" is now preventing anything like that . Thanks for the memories, do it again!!

This is my latest creation. went a bit overboard with the scale fittings so it's a tad overweight, but flys like the real thing!

Just looked in here again and drooled at that Moth of yours Matt. It looks lovely and as for going overboard with the fittings, forget that, you can never do enough as far as I'm concerned. The moth is a 'busy' looking old kite with bits and pieces poking out here and there and I intend to go the full hog with my quarter scale aircraft.....when I get time to get it out of the loft! I fitted a Flycam to the smaller moth in the preceeding pics and got some amazing footage complete with deep growl from the Saito motor. The video file sizes are probably too large to post on here so at some point I will have to play around with 'movie maker' to extract stills from the footage. I'm usually all at sea with the computer so I'll have to fiddle around when time permits.

Ok, had a fiddle around with movie maker and found out how to extract a still shot from the video footage. Thought I might share this one with you.
