Boiler wood slats

I have a 4" Horizontal boiler and want to add the ceramic insulation and then wooden slats on that fastened with brass bands.
Having never done this before so need to know what size wood to get, the length is obvious but it's the width and depth that I would like to know. have gained so much info from site but can't find what I need, such a steep learning curve when your new to the wonderfull world of steam.

Hi Monarch

New to steam myself but have covered my 3" horizontal boiler with 1.5mm x 3mm Pear which looks good - I think quite a lot of model shops are starting to stock more exotic woods & I'm fairly sure there's a guy on eBay sells it....

Not sure of its insulating properties but it has a good scale appearance imho

Nice build have you any more pictures of your topaz build, I have one to build at some point, is it one of the newer kits that is using veneered plywood ? Martin was saying it is a lot more stable . the pear can be got fron jotika by the way, how did you hold  the planks while you got the bands on..

very nice work by the way.

Hi Proteus

Thanks for the compliments  :-) the Topaz I'm building is one of the earlier kits & doesn't have the veneered ply construction, I was speaking with Brian at MHB a couple of weeks ago & he was saying that the newer kits have far more precut parts making construction more straightforward.

I held the Pear boiler slats in place with a paper based double sided tape prior to fitting the brass bands - this is actually all that holds on some of the smaller wooden strips in front of the funnel as you can see from the photograph.

It's a beautiful model but is taking me an age to complete due to other hobbies & interests. It's my first foray into the world of steam boats & I'm currently putting together the cabin. I'd be more than happy to post build photos if you or anyone else is interested, don't want to hijack this thread so could maybe start a new one...

Anyway - all the best

Mark.
