Fairline Squadron 52'...1/12 scale
« on: March 08, 2009, 03:17:36 pm »

About 5 years ago I started a new project, building a wonderfull motoryacht from Fairline, the SQUADRON 52'.
Most should be scratchbuild on a hull, I had in my workshop. This hull was a 1/10th near scale  SeaRay 380, but the project was stopped and the hull was over. So I lenghten the glassfibrehull by cutting the aft third, laminating a middlepart from the hull first and then this was glued between the cutted parts.
Here are pics of the original:

The  hull was then filled up with polyester knifing stopper, a special filler from Voss Chemie for modelbuilders. On the deck, made from expanded polystyrene and balsawood, I built up the superstructure with balsawood and polyurethane foam, normally used for cooling boxes at trucks between the aluminium surfaces.
After filling the surface after first sanding I glassed on 49g/mē with epoxy, to get a stronger surface. The frames for windows were done with soldered brass-wire 2mm dia.
For all this work, I needed about 2 years. Then I had no more time for a while, cause I had to move to another house and workshop. In 2006 I have had serious cardiac problems, so I gave away this project to a friend from Belgium.

The seats in the cabin were made from polyurethane foam, sanded only and then sprayed over with Dupli Color Blue Granit, a structural paint in a spraycan. The cabindoor is 3mm tinted perspex, framed with an u-profil from the railroadbuilders.

2007 I got an e-mail from my belgium friend Yves, that the Fairline was ready and is now running on lakes near Brussel.
The Squadron has a measurement of 1320mm loa and 340mm beam. The model is powered with 2 big e-motors (Johnson 900-type) and 24 NiMH. Weight will be little bit to heavy cause the knifing stopper on the superstructure, but the model runs very well.

Thank you for your compliments. :D

But I had a small model too. This one was built on a hull from a Sunseeker Outlaw in 1/10th scale powered by a 17x2 car motor, a Graupner 19mm Jet and 10x 500mA NC cells. This was one prototype for the Graupner Jet Sprint.
The hull was 475 x 135mm only.
