Newbie wanting Vosper RTTL plan and/or grp hull
« on: May 28, 2009, 07:07:18 pm »

I recently visited RAF Museum Hendon and saw the Vosper RTTL and this has inspired me to have a go after an absence of many years. I've built 2 Perkasa grp 49"'s in the past, the first one was powered with a disastrous Irvine 40 ABC marine ic - never again - sold it! The second one was fast electric using 2 x 700 BB Turbo's 9.6v motors powered by 2 heavy 12v 7Ah/20HR gel batteries in parallel using 2x Msonik Marine Plus 30/40 amp ESC's. The large hull carried the weight/planed easily and lasted a good 30mins on the water - still got her collecting dust in the garage. I'm hoping to find a 1:20 or 1:32 RTTL plan  or a larger grp hull as close as possible to 4 foot to enable me to use my heavy but effective Perkasa electric setup again. Any help in my quest  would be greatly appreciated. I live in NE.  :-)

Model Boats do a 1:24 Plan giving a 36" hull reference MM1335 (Cost £20). HTH

Many thanks Doug for the info for the plan of the Vosper 73' and I had a look on the site. Unfortunately this is a 4**** plan and I'm 2**unleaded although it's a fine possibility for someone more skilled than self.  :embarrassed:The post war 68' Vosper is a much easier superstructure and there's no turret/weapons on board to build which i a lot easier if I opt for a scaling to 1:18 or 1:20 to haul 2 big gel batteries. This site however does have a 1:32 Vic Smeed plan of the Hendon type 1958 RTTL which I'll order and hopefully manage to scale. I'm sure John Lambert has very accurate/comprehhensive drawings for this 73 Vosper. I've got his 5 sheet Fairmile D set surplus and they are beautifully drawn, but a 'dog boat' is also out of my league. I bought all the resin/wm fittings inc weapons for my perkasa but did'nt fit them because of their huge weight although they look good. Are you interested in coastal/fast attack - one day I'll do a late war Elco 80.  :-)

Perkasaman hi ya there

Perhaps the Vosper RTTL Launch, designed by Vic Smead, plan number MM530 - experience rating two stars - is more to your liking?

It is not a difficult construction; although, originally it was designed for IC it has on the drawing positions for the twin screw version.

It is interesting to see that you have the John Lambert drawings for the Fairmile D, as this is next in my build list.  :D

As you say though, the build is not for the beginner - so I am definitely going to have to struggle with it  %%

The Vosper 72 foot Air Sea Rescue Launch (which was mentioned in a previous post) is the one I built from the John Pritchard plans & original Vosper drawings, - the hull of this model is an extremely difficult hull to reproduce accurately, because of the underwater shape of the hull.

Hope this is of some help.  :-))

Many thanks to cdsc for the link to Dean's Marine - a very impressive quality hull and thanks also to Martin for the link to Wickstead to see an example of this hull completed into a very fine RTTL.
What a day I've had!   :-)-
Happy birthday to  Bluebird and thank you for a great afternoon  :}- the Lambert 'dog boat' plans have finally found their rightful home and I look forward to drooling over this model when it's finished. It will join John's very fine (St Nazaire Raid) Fairmile B. It's astounding to see the quality and craftsmanship of John's collection - what a fleet! and all scratch built. This afternoon, chatting with John, I realised how much the technology has improved since I last dabbled but also how many of the local model shops which have now closed and how few of the remaining cater for boats and their building materials in spite of there being so many great park lakes in the area. Hopefully my picture of the hendon boat will load.

I think you will find that the boat at Wicksteed is one of Dean's Marine new ready to run boats not a finished kit.

Take a look here  http://deansmarine.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/products_id/2240

Hi Doug I did suspect that the Wicksteed model being in the Deans clump of pix was quite possibly their 1:24 RTR nicely fettled and that the link to their Mouldeans section offers this (?) 1:24 hull only for £74.38.
I have also now studied the 1:24 Vic Smeed plan (kindly loaned by Bluebird - I've got one coming from MyHobbyStore for £12.40 inc. postage, hopefully, in the post.) The scale of 1:24 gives a length of 34" and although this is a beamy hull I'll still be forced to use nicads and have a ' 7 minute  thumb sapping pond skater'.  I need bigger fuel tanks for my mighty twin 700BB Turbo Griffons  for longer missions 8). So it's buy a 1:24 hull or build a larger scale alternative.
I visited a previous haunt, happily still in business - a fine purveyor of fuel tanks - He has a boatload of megga 12v 12Ah Panasonic gel jobbies at £12.99. (He's got a pallet of these threatening to come through the floor of his upstairs storeroom. )
I also hear tell that those Griffon boffins have  mightier 850BB Turbo versions available and which may propel a brace of these Panasonic Jumbos in a seemly manner as befitting one of Vosper's finest and get me a decent session at the pool side - once I've launched and parked up the forklift truck.  ok2  :o These new tanks have made my situation worse - the agony of choice!

Different Scale Options:    (RTTL is 68' = 816")
1:24.......................... 816 divided by 24 = 35"
1:20......... de dah de dah..................... = 40"
1:18................................................... = 45"
1:16................................................... = 50"
1:14................................................... = 58"
1:12................................................... = 68"
1: 2.......................................................................... Ring up a local boatyard  :o
1:1........................................................................... Buy a copy of Boat Mart  %%

Ahhhhh! Found an intrepid  1:12 build by '272e' on this very fine site in the 'Dry Dock' section - I shall investigate and return. (The Bow of this Vosper is remarkably similar to the Elco80 - is it a shortened Elco hull or is it just me?)

Brian,

Go to pronta print in Nile Street, North Shields if you need to make a copy of your plans, I do this to keep the originals clean.

Many thanks for the address Riggers - got to decide the scale - might need a few more frame drawings for a larger hull to get the correct hull lines, particularly the bow. I'm wondering if John Lambert has drawn the 58 RTTL - more research needed before I visit the print shop and do the deed.
I think it's too late DickyD.

Many thanks Circlip (Ian)  :} this site is very, very interesting ( German accent) - Hannna prop shafts  ok2 /48" 1:24 PT hull (an Elco is 1:20 scale at this length/I've had the original available Elco and Higgins drawings for years.) Quit a selection of larger scale hulls - needs a telephone call to check out the Vosper. I really appreciate the help.

Quick update: I contacted John Lambert - what a helpful/knowledgeable person, his contribution to wartime coastal craft heritage through his draughtsmanship and writing is both legendary and prolific. He could'nt help with the RTTL although, at first there was hope, but I did get superb 1:32plans for a late war Elco 80 for a later time.
The difficult issues involved in achieving power and endurance using electric power, particularly with fast military/service craft may now be solved having investigated the single prop Perkasa thread by our member Stavros  :o Marine glowplug engines can run  ballistic all day but can be temperamental/difficult/dangerous for beginners (me) and weight has still to be added to the hull for a decent scale look at speed.
