You also have to disconnect the mechanical drive to the variable resistor (potentiometer) (volume control :-) ) inside the servos.

I was assuming that that would come out with the electronics...

Thanks for the servo recommendation Dodgy Geezer. It has worked just fine. Removing the electronics and potentiometer was dead simple. The 'stops' were a little more fiddly as they were located in the gearing. With a single cell the final rotation speed was aprox 30 rpm, more or less just right.

The photos show the full assembly. It is not quite a smooth rotation yet but that is due to shaft alignment which I need to sort. Also I have used Evergreen plastic rod as the flexible drive shaft but I don't think that will take the continual 'twisting'. I will probably replace it with some nylon fishing line.

The most awkward bit was possibly the 'pluggable' connection so I can still remove the whole array.

Glad it worked so well - GC also do a very cheap 4-channel radio (£25!) and their cheapest servos are £1.94 - http://www.giantcod.co.uk/towerpro-sg90s-micro-servo-p-403861.html

At these prices it's not very expensive to experiment. I was rather taken with using the electronic innards of the servo to build a simple ESC, as here:

GC has some good gear at very competitive prices so much so that it could be cheaper to buy a complete servo just to get a particular component of it, allowing you to, as you say, experiment inexpensively.

Thanks again

Howard

Still some way to go but, along with some other fittings, have completed the rescue ladder. See photos attached. Thanks again to Bluebird who gave me the necessary info to build it. Hopefully early next year we might have a launching.

Had not realised that it was so long since I lasted posted anything! For various reasons last year and so far this year has been full of personal problems so have had little time for the RTTL.

Have made some progress but as can be seen from the attached photo, but even this has had its problems. Painting the hull was the most annoying as after spending considerable time on several undercoats and top coats there seems to have been a reaction with the masking tape or with the original sealer where the tape was. The surface is quite 'mottled' in places! not too evident in the attached photo.

Not much further to go but not predicting when the finish will be.

Looking good Howard :-))
I wouldn't be too worried about perfection with the paint finish, I've spent ages trying to get a perfect finish but realised that I'd spend so long achieving it or attempting it I wouldn't finish the model for several years. These were working boats so a little 'wear or damage or imperfection' would not look out of place.
But it looks really good in the photo ok2  So well done.

Thanks John, it is Paddy Freemans in Jesmond. Nice size but too many ducks and the next time I went up there was a lot of debris floating around. Hoping to make contact with the club there and check out who and how often it is cleared!

Still debating on the next build.

Thank you very much for the compliments and also thank you to all the members for the help and support provided during the build.

I had not originally intended to be so obsessive with regards to detail, which has meant I ended up making virtually all the fittings from scratch, but have enjoyed both the research and the making. With regard to some of the superstructure I had to make some compromises as I used the basic units I built over 50 years ago. However to have started these again from scratch would have extended the build even more, with very little additional detail.

From studying all the photos I could find it is obvious that the actual RTTLs must have had various refurbs. throughout their life. This coupled with the lack of info, or info being found too late I have ended up with a model that is nowhere near a true representation of the 2754 at any stage of its life, but is my best interpretation based on the data I have researched.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the process and I know that I have learnt a lot from the experience and this will be used on the next build. One thing I need to brush up on is my painting, if you will excuse the pun.

The model has five on/off switches, various lights and the radar dish can be controlled. These are driven from the spare channels on the RC with servos operating latching switches. If anybody is interested and I can supply further info and photos if required. It is a bit Heath Robinson but does work. However I am thinking of possibly building an electronic version.

Thanks again
