New to the hobby with lots of questions ... Help !!!!
« on: October 14, 2009, 10:49:42 am »

Hi everyone

Firstly, let me introduce myself.

Name is Alan and I've just been given an unfinished project which was started by my brother-in-law, he said that he had lost interest and would I like the Huntsman 31 he had started a few years back. "Too right was my reply", and so I have joined the forum to ask a few questions and marvel at the boats which have already been finished so well by it's members.

OK, the model is a Precedent Huntsman 31, length 34 inch with fibreglass hull

The motor I got with the deal is a Graupner 700 BB Turbo (8.4V) but I'm totally confused on how to fix a round motor and at the correct angle to the prop shaft ???

I wonder if someone could point me in the correct direction of how to fix this motor correctly ??

Could I run this model using an old motorcycle 12V battery that I have in the garage ... silly question I know, but just had to ask.

Also can anyone suggest a speed controller for this motor, all these volts, amps, etc have totally confused me.

Many thanks on anyone who can assist me with my problems,  sorry they may all seem silly questions, but I'm totally confused.

Thanks in anticipation

Alan

lots of model shops sell them but you can make them easy out of ally , try to keep away from plastic mounts as they flex and can be difficult to fit as you cannot just bend them to get the correct angle also they do not act as a heat sink.

Thanks Peter

Ah! Ah! ... I'll go and have a search in the garage for an old bit of ally ... I think I have some stainless steel, but that's a swine to work with ....

If I can't find any, I'm going to the Midlands Model Engineering Show next Monday, so hopefully I will be able to my hands on some there.

Thank you once again

If you are in to model eng you may think about something like this I have done a few geared set ups , you have to run a few volts extra but the motor stays stone cold and you dont have a coupling to break we run 2 to1 and it is fast.hear are two set ups they are both with 700bbs

the last picture is a beefed up version when we tried brushles with about 3 times the power, but the basic mounts can be made with hand tools and ally bought from ebay.

Welcome aboard, Alan

Nice boat (and you have good progress on the build, too :})

The answer to your motorcycle battery question is yes, quite suitable as long as the obvious things are right - size and weight

It is probably not sealed, so it will have to be fitted the right way up and the usual precautions taken to ventilate when charging, but the M/c battery will be unworried by the current draw.  It will in many ways be MUCH more suitable than the sealed batteries which most folks use which were never intended for multi-amp discharge, but generally seem to survive.

The metal bracket is a good solution to motor fixing  - you can also make a baseplate in say 1/8 ply with two bearers of 10mm square balsa
spaced and shaped to "cradle" the motor.
Then a tie-wrap will hold the motor to the bearers and Bob is your avuncular relative

Hi Alan, I have just started making machined Ally motor mounts for different motors, the 700 size mounts are £5 each + P&P All mounts come with stainless steel Allen button head screws.

are you not putting the cooling holes in for the likes of the 700bb? as they draw air through the front.

WOW Guys !!!!!

So much help .... Thanks a million ... I couldn't find any scrap ally in the garage, so will wait until Monday until I visit the Model Engineer's Show, might get a piece from there.

Fine on the motorcycle battery, at present it's on charge in the garage. I'm hoping the 700 BB will propel the boat through the water at a rate of knots. My only other concern regarding the electrics is the speed controller ... what do you guys suggest ????? I read somewhere that a Jeti NAVY was the fella to use ??? Or would a cheaper controller do the trick.

Looking at the pictures or motor mounts and gearboxes left me a little open mouthed .... thinking, bloody hell, I can't make that !!! ... but I'm willing to give it go, then when I fail, I'll get on the net and buy one ... LOL

Thanks again for all those who replied to my plea for help .... most appreciated

Use a Action electronics esc (speed controller).
Look on the traders section or send FLJ a pm,excellent service.
You could go down the fleabay route and get a cheap one,but they are not all up to what they say.
You can use the motorcycle battery, but if it is not sealed, will have to be kept upright, and are heavy for a fast boat.
If you want to sceam it around, think of water cooling as been shown
