Victorian Steam Launch
« on: January 16, 2008, 04:23:46 pm »

Hi all, can anyone identify or recognise this model, I bought it at public auction about a year ago in a very rough condition.
The engine and boiler could be by Stevens model dockyard,circa 1897-1907, the steam cylinder is very similar to the Birmingham piddler at the NRM in York. The engine has full lever operated reversing gear and drives a 3 1/2" bronze prop.  It has been suggested that the spindle molded hull, which is copper sheaved below the water line, could be a Bassett Lowke product?
In restoration I have fitted a single servo utilising the holes already cut in the deck by previous owners, this drives the tiller though pulley blocks. The boat steams very well at 10 psi.  I have tested the boiler to 30 psi and it holds pressure with no decay for 30 minutes. The fittings and flag pole are made from K&S metal tube and scrap brass.

I really like the lever reverse on that.  Does it work ok?

Take a look at the Windermere steam launch "Bat". It looks very similar.

Hi the reversing lever works well, but as the engine is a single cylinder, so I only use it when demonstrating the boat out of water.
With regard to Footski's comment about the Bat I see his point, Bat was built in 1891.  I think the model may be later around 1898 - 1901.  I only wish someone out there could shed some light on its history.

I have to say I'm not much of an open launch fan. But that is a beautiful boat.

When Cheddar Models released the Proteus plant, they had a hull made which was names Arrow. It was based on a turn of the century gentleman fast launch and looked very similar to yours. With the Proteus installed and a full head of steam it was also very fast, and at around 50 inches long anyone sharing the lake with it made sure they were well out of the way :}

Don't know what happened to it, sold off when the factory closed I presume.

Anyway, yours is a very pretty launch...I could almost be tempted....almost.
