Agree with you FLJ , However I did not think there was vat on postage if using the Royal mail.

Do you want the full lecture or just the reference in VAT Notice 700 'VAT: General Guide'?
Trust me, Mr Build - I have 31 very good reasons to know about VAT....... ;)

nah Full lecture Not Required , went on a Vat course , Fell Asleep..Buffet was nice though. :}  and as for Intrastat declerations.... %% %%

I am only showing from our business point of view that we are not able to charge or claim vat back on the postage we use , and was wondering if it was the same.  as when we buy our postage (Franking Machine) we do not apparently get charged vat

Quote from vat N.700
1.4 Aren’t postal charges exempt from VAT?
Postal services provided by the Post Office are exempt from VAT, but this exemption does not extend to similar services provided by other suppliers, even where this might be seen as being in direct competition with the Post Office. However, if any delivery charge you make to your own customers includes the cost of stamps you buy from the Post Office you may have to charge VAT on the whole amount including the cost of those stamps.

Clear as Mud...

Not wishing to hijack this thread with VAT matters (I've had a belly-full; and I was also the Intrastat Officer for Notts for ten years!) but have a shufti at Leaflet 700/24, Section 2 on Delivered Goods. SO....... "I will say this only once......."
When the Post Office supply (sell) the service of postage to you then there's no VAT due - so you can't claim any back. However, if you recharge your customer for delivery - which may or may not include the service which you bought from Royal Mail - then there's VAT on the full, delivered price (unless it relates to an export of goods).
There's a change of liability involved for the postage element, in much the same way as a restaurant won't pay VAT on their food ingredients but they have to charge it on cooked meals made from them.
However, any carrier other than the Royal Mail will  have to charge VAT on the supply of shipping services to you (so you can  claim that back). It's yet another one of the reasons why independent carriers resent the Post Office's monopoly for small items.
OK?
FLJ (Ex-Senior Officer of Her Majesty's Customs and Excise - not ruddy "HMRC"!)

BTW I've just tried the link to Inwood, and when I hit "Materials and Glues" my trusty AVAST! found a virus. Caveat emptor!

How much is the UK VAT?
In Ontario Canada we pay a 8% Provincial Sales tax and a 5% Federal Goods and Services tax.

Gerald.

Only just  enough to pay my enormous, inflation-proof pension; fill the tank in my Range Rover HSE; pay off my Amex Gold card every month and keep the staff in employment at my Tuscan villa....................and then I woke up  <:(

Vat 2.5% is back from Midnight 31 Dec unless you are in a pub or restrauant where you get 2 hours grace
Hopefully this will stop aggro if your round was to get more expensive

So we all need to order all the bits we need from FLJ now so the maths is nice and easy for him to work out (and save ourselves 2.5%)

Oh, don't you have to pay vat on the lease of the franking machine ?

No - that's not correct, or you'd then have a VAT rate of 20% on petrol, which would require both UK parliamentary and EU approval. Petrol, like alcohol and tobacco, is a product which is subject not only to VAT but also to Excise Duty. The nasty little trick there is that the VAT is added to the price AFTER adding the duty i.e. there's VAT on the Duty ('double taxation'). The rate  of VAT changed in December 2008 and again today, but don't confuse that with the amount  of VAT - which changes whenever there's an increase in either the dealer price or the duty rate.
And then there's the Fuel Price Escalator, which may or may not be brought back......................... "Simples!"
Isn't taxation fun?  :o

Err forgive me if i am a bit thick , but i thought that vat was increasing by 2.5% (maths bit going on now)
as vat stood at 15% and the price of fuel here was £1.06 per ltr that meant the duty was 15.9p , are you still with me ? .
So 2.5% of 90.1p is 2.25p  and if you add this to the old vat and add to the price of fuel without any vat you get £108.25p
SO WHY HAS IT GONE UP TO £109.9 FOR A LITRE OF PETROL  >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(
Grrrr.
I apologise for the out burst if i am thick  :embarrassed:  %% .

I don't think you're thick - this isn't the easiest thing for a 'layman' to grasp. Read what I wrote again, if you can stand it. The price increase doesn't have to be entirely due to tax changes. If the supplier or dealer choses to take a little bit extra profit from the punters on the back of a tax rise then the Chancellor isn't going to be too bothered. He doesn't have to pay for his road fuel..............we do.

The breweries used to do the same thing every single time there was a duty increase in beer, and there's a bloke round here who made a fortune buying huge stocks of fags just before a budget and then flogging them afterwards with the new duty rate added, and a bit extra for himself.

And your maths is a bit suspect, too. If the price is £1.06 then the VAT included is £1.06 x 15/115, not 15/100. That makes the price excluding VAT £0.92. Add 17.5% to that and you get £1.08, so the supplier is helping himself to an extra 2p. That's what they call business......you  can call it what you will!

That's One pound and Nine-point-Nine pence, not One Hundred and Nine Pounds and Nine pence! It's still bl00dy expensive, mind. For our members' benefit, $1.25AU is about £0.69GB.

69p per litre for petrol, 10% GST (VAT), no snow, why wouldn't you want to live in Australia???  {-) {-) We have been warned that petrol prices will rise by about 5 cents per litre soon, though  <:(
