help. gemini engines dont bounce !!!
« on: July 28, 2009, 08:30:53 pm »

Yesterday I dropped my cheddar Gemini onto the bench from a height of 2 inches & now it wont turn properly. It landed on the eccentric shaft side. if i put the reverse lever to full throw one side, the engine wont turn 1 way & will turn approx half a turn the other. however , with the reversing lever in a central position the engine turns freely in either direction & doesn't start to bind up until the reversing lever is pushed 3/4 of the way to its full over position ( i hope that makes sense). It is impossible to see if anything is bent with the naked eye & would require a complete strip down to determine it.
my thoughts are that maybe the valve timing has been knocked out, as it feels that the gears start to bind as the lever is pushed further over.
I would really appreciate your thoughts on this guys, or maybe a suggestion of someone who can help sort this out

please don't laugh to much at me for doing such an incredibly stupid thing

Many many thanks Glenn

I would say youv'e knocked one of the eccentrics out of it's location on the shaft- have you got timing diagrams to compare it to?

Hi Greg, unfortunately i don't have any technical spec on the engine at all.I tried e mailing a couple of people who used to work for cheddar but they understandably seem a little reluctant to get involved. so I'm not quite sure what my next move is
cheers Glenn

p.s. thanks for not laughing too much

No-one is going to laugh Glenn, this happens to us all and we beat ourselves up for it!  Two weeks ago I split a few drops of water on my laptop as I have to drink two litres of water a day at the moment.  Normally i wouldn't dream of drinking water next to a keyboard.  The laptop is now dead and looking like about 400.00 quids worth of new motherboard is required!!

As for your engine, you have a couple of possibilities already and my own suggestion would be to send a PM to Bogstandard.  He is extreemly competent with these things and is always maore than happy to help fellow modellers.  I personally don't think it is valve timing because it would still spin freely by hand but wouldn't run very well.  Something is obviously binding and so a bent component is the most likely.  One option for now is to disconnect the rods one at a time and see if this frees it up so at least you can then narrow it down to what is causing the binding.  If you are unhappy with playing around like this don't worry, there are plenty of people to help here and none would dream of laughing.  We all simply consider ourselves lucky it wasn't us!!

As Richard has said, you have most probably bent or knocked something out of sync, and things like this happen all the time.

If you don't know what to look for, DON'T go disassembling or moving things about.

Whoever it is that fixes it for you needs to see it as is, to compare the different areas before he starts. The more original the better.

I am rather busy this week medically, but if you still can't get someone to look at it for you, PM or email me and I will arrange something for you.

But does this mean that our 'bogstandard' is to bestowed an Honorary Doctor type thinge? ......PhD ..... :-)) in Engineering Science for the cause of Model Makers the world over?

Sounds a good story to me  O0 {-) %%..........best to all @ Crewe Engineering ++++++++ Bandit & Vinnie      ..  :-)

once again guys i am amazed by the constant generosity of the Mayheme rs & thank everybody for their kind offers. I have already talked to Jerry at clevdon steam, & he has offered some advise as to possible causes. However most of these require me dismantling the engine & I have neither the tools or the skills levels required to do this. so i will take up 1 of your kind offers of help. Many thanks

After my disaster with the Gemini engine, i received several offers of help from mayhemmers.

Steamboat Phil was first in with an offer to look at the engine, & this weekend I received the engine back from him in perfect working order. In fact in runs much better than it ever did !!!!!!!!!

Phil, being the great man he is, refused to accept any form of payment for his time & expert help, he wouldn't even except payment for the postage to return the engine.
I would have been completely stuffed without his help, & just had to offer my profound thanks to him on this forum.

PHILL U DA MAN  :-))  :-))  :-))

Once again the members here have proved what a wonderful comunity this is, & steamboatphil is top of the list for me !!!!

with greratful thanks Glenn

It had knocked the timing out, the stop pins on the gear end were missing & the drive shaft was bent. No wonder i was struggling with it.
