Help and advice please
« on: July 09, 2010, 07:29:29 am »

In an auction my wife picked uo this hull.

It's made of marine ply; three and a half kg in weight, 870mm long, 260mm beam, 210mm high from the keel to the top of the wheelhouse.

I am thinking of putting an engine and rudders in her.
Presumably the battery will go in the forward compartment and the motor in the aft. I have two 4.5A (6v) batteries and a 2channel dual stick transmitter remote control from The Majestic Fishing Boat which I bought some two years ago when I first got interested, which I presume I could use with other boats, obviously not at the same time.
I hope I can get this hull working. I presume that I need to cut a hatch in the rear compartment. The battery could go in the front currently open compartment and the motor, prop in the to be cut out rear.
What on a limted retirement budget should I buy to get it have a go getting it working?
Never done this before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First go at electrics
Cheers,
John

If you're just wanting to cruise,I'd think maybe a 4mm propshaft with a 35mm 3-blade prop, running on a stock 540 motor and a 15-20 Amp viper marine ESC. I'm sure that FLJ will probably suggest something better though. :-))

:-)) Thanks, Dreadstar. I suspect this will be a project for the Autumn. The hull cost £12 and it's a shame to waste it.

I'm looking at the third picture down. There's a hole in the bulkhead immediately above the keel which was probably intended for the shaft tube, and the sloping ply plate ahead of it is almost certainly a motor mount plate. The battery would therefore have to go in the aft compartment.
At 3.5Kg this is no lighweight hull. If all you want is to potter around a bit then maybe a standard 540 on 7.2v would do the job, just as Dreadstar says. For a bit more oomph I'd be tempted to fit a 700-size motor, but not the BB Turbo Nutter Loony variety. An MMB/ACTion 755 would be nice on 12v, perhaps with a 45mm 3-blade brass scale prop.
A Viper would do, but there are  other speed controllers around, too  %)

I'm looking at ALL the pictures, and if your lady is anywhere near as nagging as an ex of mine, she'll have your guts for garters when she sees that swanky table covered in bits of boat and tape-measurers and what-not.

But she has left her mum's sewing machine on it!

Ah, but if you look closely the Singer is actually intregral to the table itself (the truth is, it's not really, but that is what she will try to have you believe (it's just a hole that some previous punter had made with his jigsaw)). Ergo the sewing machine is implying that the table is HER table and like woe betide the poor bloke who messes with it.

And if you look even closer you'll notice a scratch on the top.
Just wait 'til she sees THAT.

:-)) :-)) Cheers, Guys. Apologies for the delay in getting back ................... went to Mousehole's Sea, Salt and Sail Festival yesterday! Cool stuff! Sailing Mackerel and Pilchard Driver Luggers, a Cutter and St Ives Jumbos.
Thanks for the help.
The Singer is lined up for SWMBO to make the sails for the pond yacht. This is proving to be a challenge. The pond yacht on my other thread is my first go at anything boat wise. We unfortunately bought the wrong material and it has a nylon element in it. So back to the drawing board and a trip to buy a cotton material or sailcloth. I want a result which makes the barking (tanning) effect from the use of cutch. tomorrow I'm going down to see an old friend who was a shipwright by trade for his lifetime and makes superb static models. I need his advice as I hope at some stage to make a Mounts Bay Lugger. Well that's probably pie in the sky but we'll see!!!!!! Another friend of mine' s grandfather was a sailmaker for the fishing boats so he has been very helpful. hey ho
Fortunately SWMBO is very patient! ................... well most of the time BUT yes, the dining room table is her domain so my invasion of it was brief!!!!!!!!!!!   >>:-(
Now this is all great fun!
