I am looking for information on Rowing boats mechanisms. I've got the modelboat plans for "Rowey" but it is very basic, any help would be appreciated. Peter

Peter, on one of the biggest shows in Germany there was a modeler group who had built some canoes with Indians sitting inside, doing the rowing. If you want to I will have a look and be back to you, to find out some informations....

I remember some plans for a rower - they were fine if you were, like the builder, a VTR repairer, since almost all the bearings and joints he used were from junked VCRs. Very frustrating. I must build a trireme, one of these days, or maybe a penteconter if I don't feel strong enough. Actually, what I really want to do is a steam trireme.

Hi Peter, there is an article in Marine Modelling International dated January 2005 entitled Two Men in a boat written by Chris Chambers,he used clutch and gearbox from an RC tank. Hope this helps,

Thanks for the infomathion, a couple of years ago I saw a Pirate in a rowing boat at one of the cheddar steam events. it was quite complicated but that is the type of mechanism I'm looking for .all I can remember is that it had two clutches..

It's all very well to drive the oars from a totally circular motion, as in the crabfu rowing mechanism, but for realism the horizontal movement should be more than the vertical movement. This of course causes problems in the model if it rolls - really you need a feedback mechanism on the end of each oar to keep it a constant height above the water on the back stroke. When I was at school this was called an oarsman.

In that case I reckon you've got to separate the "lift and drop" from the "pull and push" actions. This would not be too difficult inside a trireme, where you can have one oar frame to connect all the looms to, and could probably be done with bellcranks, but is more difficult in a wee man. You can always cheat and use perspex pushrods. If I had'nt got a complete rebuild of the fleet on (and I've just found the sails for a wishbone schooner project in the garage), I'd have a go myself. I've always found solving problems more fun than perfect scale, but that's probably because I can't be bothered with detailing. Each to his own.

I have been doing some design work for a project to build a 10 oared pulling Lifeboat. Part of this has been around turning a rotation from a motor into a rowing stroke. As I will have 5 Ora's each side I will be running them as two sets from independent motors. All the Ora's on each side will be connected together. What I have come up with so far is a rotating disk under the deck with a rod that goes through a pivot in the deck and the end of the rod connected to the Ora with more of the rod above the pivot you get a oval motion as in the diagram below. If you want to try and keep the Ora out of the water on its back stroke you could look at gimbling the mechanism along the fore aft line this would allow the boat to rock and the Ora's to stay level.

have a look at the shows catagory alfold 2005 photos by john bass, also dabblers model show photos by guy bagley, there are some great rowing boats built by mike sheppard from south wales.
mike is booked in for this years charity show at alfold on 2nd/3rd june, come along and meet him, i know he wil spend a lot of time showing you how it all works

I have been to brighton model world today 17/2/07, mike sheppard is there and has 7 models on display all operated by various rowing devices if you are able to get there he is displaying again 18/2/07.

hi peter, it's alan again, i'm not certain but there was a pirate in a rowing boat which may have been the one in the photos, i believe it was a member of the eastbourne club, again many miles from home in your case
