Alternative burner type for vertical boiler. ( Non ceramic )
« on: November 01, 2010, 03:17:23 pm »

I use this design ,as an alternative to the ceramic type, modified to suit the application, and find it works well. You have to experiment in terms of pipe diameter,( I usually use 10mm ), the ring diameter, and the number and sizes of the holes.

 The page attached was the starting point and the extract is for a burner for the 16mm gauge vertical boiler de Winton, designed by Dave Watkins.

Hello Steamboatwilly! :-)
I like this burner. According to the number of holes, it must deliver a lot of heat and warm up faster that the one I have actually..
But:
- Can I use it in a verticale position to put in place of my ceramic one which is placed on the side of my boiler?
- Any idea of the flow: Gr per hour?
-Do I need to pressure up the gas tank to keep a good flowing?
Thanks for your help.
I succeed to improve mine today! ok2 I had  dirt (from a weld)  in the burner's line coming back , even after good blow and passed a cable in it. {:-{
Although, I cleaned good before use, I guess this dirt stood in place just to p.. me off. <*<
Still the results are not as expected, as I need 15/20 min to reach 2 Bars!
Keeping going on!
Cheers! :-))

I must admit that I have not tried in the vertical plane, but see no reason why it should not work. Only one way to find out.  I will now make a mock up and try, and let you know. No idea of gas flow rate as I run mine from the large size propane bottle you can get, about 4ft tall, as it is the same bottle for the propane silver solder torches on a 4 bar variable regulator.
I find the experimental side most interesting. Also the research and boat build I prefer to running/sailing  the completed boat I will experiment and send you a PM. Thank you for your interest and observations.
The plus is that the cost of this type of burner is a few pence, compared to a ceramic type.
Regards.
