"Dolly" from Lake Windermere
« on: January 02, 2011, 08:29:39 pm »

I thought members would like to see my live steam model of Steam Launch "Dolly" at 1" to the foot. This was started some 30 years ago whilst on holiday in the Lakes. Just recently finished!!!

All parts are scratch built except the gas tank and the flags.

Well done Pembini- a very good likeness indeed!

Did you work from plans?

The boiler and engine are spot on- if you wanted to be as close as possible the valve gear on the engine is painted red too.- see attached pic.
You'll have to bring it upto the Steamboat Museum when your next up!

Thank you for your interest

Yes I did manage to get a photocopy of the true plans of "Dolly" by asking around in Windermere 30 years ago!!! The souveneer plans from the museum are of little help.

The boiler shown is the one incorporated into the model. Its size is scaled from the original but is a dry back instead of the original wet back. The design incorporates water tubes and flue tubes. It is based on a Marione Boiler by W. Melville, Model and Allied Publications Ltd. Number 22. It is fired from a gas fed blowlamp burner and has a built in blower for initial steam raising. The air inlet holes to the blowlamp can be seen in the model

The engine uses castings from the "Trojan". The  main support and fittings are scratch built scaled from the original

Non original items include the oiler and condenser to comply with model engineering practice

That's a cute launch you've built. I am particularly interested in the boiler, as it is the first that I see with water tubes in the dry back return chamber. Does it also have water tubes in the large bottom flue?

There are no water tubes in the bottom flue. When assembled there is a copper plate bolted across the six water tubes. This deflects the flame into the flue tubes and increases the heat induced into the water tubes by effectively increasing their surface area.

There are two bosses seen on the rear. One is connected to a  steam collector pipe along the top inside of the boiler and the other goes through a pipe to the steam valve on the front of the boiler. A single coil super heater is mounted between these bosses
