« on: April 17, 2011, 07:59:07 am »

Good Morning All, My name is Jimmy I live in Knowsley just outside of Liverpool, I am new RC boating but I have had some experience of building RC aircraft and cars in the past but work commitments stopped me for a few years, I am now retired with a bit of time on my hands ( looks over shoulderto make sure wife isn't reading this ) so I would like to get involved with you chaps if you don't mind.  Jimmy.

Hello Jimmy

Welcome to the forum  :-))

I am new to RC Model Boating myself and been a member of this forum for about 2 months, however I have learnt a lot just from reading the discussion threads.

Looking forward to your contributions.

Thanks Kleban and John44,

I am still trying to make up my mind if I want to buy a ready built model or build my own, in the past I've built from plans and flown balsa rc planes, I would rather build my own but I don't know which would be a decent beginners model to start with, and where to get the plans, any ideas?

cheers Jimmy.

what type of boats are you into, and whats your budget? these 2 things can help you decide what type of model, rtr or kit to buy.

Welcome aboard!! Lots of choices, lots of plans about, some of them free in Mags. They build into reasonably small and cost effective ( cheap!!) models which will only need a 2 channel radio, also very cheap today. Sailing boats can be a bit more complicated because of the sailmaking and rigging, but save because there is no motor/drive/ propshaft , drive batteries etc.
You can always build both, it is allowed! Main thing is enjoy the Hobby, if there is a Club near you, go along and say "Hello" and have alook at what they do, you might even get a chance to drive one! You have come to the right place for advice, sometimes conflichting, but all valid!!

hi and welcome, i made the pilot boat in mmi 2004 as my first model, it is classed as one star which is said to be easey? i found it easey but have built on from this to build waverley paddel ship and many more. you will find that the free plans in mmi or model boats are a first class choice. todate i have built over 15 boats from plans given free in magazines i dont like kits but that is my choice others do. hope this helps i am addicted to building boats. but enjoy  what you build

Jimmy,

what a polite and friendly introduction! Even the header has an element of formality and protocol about it. Lovely to see. :-))

Good luck to you mate, I hope as a consequence you get all the help and assistance you deserve.

My route into the model boating world was to buy a Deans Marine kit and learn from the construction of it. I currently build semi scratch from that knowledge and have a healthy confidence in building. (But never over-confident). %)

Whatever you choose to do, good luck to you because your courtesy is infectious. :-)) O0

maybe one day we can compere photo's.

Cheers Jimmy.

Good Morning all,

After a lot of thought and searching amongst the posts on here I have decided to send of for the Precedent model of the KD Perkasa wooden hull (49in) from Westbourne models,
because I am comfortable working with wood rather than GRP, unless someone can think of a better idea?

cheers  Jimmy

While I'm waiting for the Perkasa to arrive I think I'll have a bash at a Springer Tug, after reading about them on here they look fun to build and even better to sail,
it will give me a chance to get my carpentry skills sharpened.
I'll try and take some photo's and put them up for all to see and hopefully comment on.

cheers

Welcome aboard Jimmy
I am quite new to this forum, and already greatly appreciate the knowledgable and friendly advice received on my first build project in almost 40 years.  That one will take some time, but thanks to the world of E-Bay I now have something to sail whilst I am building the submarine. Hopefully first outing at Black Park on Sunday!
Good luck with your KD Pergassa, I look forward to regular updates with photos.  The Springer tug should be a good introduction, and I am sure will build confidence whilst the Pergassa comes together.
Best wishes !
