My steam plant
« on: March 05, 2011, 10:23:59 am »

Hi
just another Q or 2 :embarrassed:
I'm about to fire up the plant, (Minature Steam boiler and gas tank, TVR1a motor)
My questions are
(1) When filling up the 2" gas tank from a disposable camping gas bottle thing, how long does it take to fill my 2" tank. 30 seconds?? 90 seconds??? Longer???
(2) How much steam oil can I expect to use? It is an adjustable displacement lubricator, positioned just up-stream of the regulator.
Hopefully, it will be chugging away on the bench tomorrow. :-))
Thanks
Mick

Hi Mick,

Fill the tank until it spits out liquid gas- the time this takes varies, but it shouldn't be more than around 90 secs from experience.

The lubricator should be shut all the way and turned back about 1/2 turn- if you find you are using a lot then make it 1/4 turn.

NEVER NEVER fill the gas tank in the boat, gas is heaver than air and will fill the bottom of the boat, so when you light up er BANG.

Thanks Folks
I fired it up and it ran "almost" perfect. {-)
Just a few issues, nothing I can't sort out over the next week or two. {:-{
Mr HS93, The instructions I got with my steam set-up, bought from Minature Steam in Australia, are almos identical to the one's you posted.
Maybe John in Aust has bought the rights to Cheddar????
The goods I bought seem to be top quality, I've no complaints, and any problems are sorted out by return email.
Google "Minature Steam", or read their adverts in the English Mags.
And NO, I intend the bottle to be removable from the boat!  (PAST EXPERIENCE! in a different life!) %%
Thanks
Mick

Hi Peter,
No doubt you will recall that this engine was discussed at great length on the forum with a reply from the maker in OZ.
I must say that it's not to their credit that it took 3- engineers 4 - years to " HAVE A GO AT DRAWING UP A DESIGN' and then come up with this copy.
I am very surprised that an injunction was not slapped on them to cease production with a view to Stuart Models suing them for copyright , but then maybe
John Woodroofe of Cheddar never registered the design.
It has to be the nearest case of plagiarism that I have seen in a long time , even to the copied instructions as stated by MICK as being nearly identical.
It's obviously a nice little engine but still looks like a copy.

Copy of discussion from OZ maker and his spat with Proteus, I wonder if they ever took him up on his offer to send him an engine to revue.
George.

Boy are there some skeptics out there!
Sorry Proteus but your assumptions are wrong. I am responding for no other reason than to put the record straight. I resent the implication/s that we are “guilding the lilly”. We are not!

A steam engine is a steam engine and it is difficult to design one that does not look like any other. None of our products have been reverse engineered. Yes the Clyde does look like the Puffin but that is where the similarities stop. Three engineers had a go at drawing up our requirements starting 4 years ago. The last one got the design right and we have polished the design in prototype testing. The design has many superior features as a result of this testing. If you thought the Puffin was good wait till you try Clyde. This work is also spawning an extension to the range that will be announced shortly.
