[The long Build]

Please do NOT read this thread if you are of a nervous disposition !!

Despite all the Council warnings about the catastrophic risk to life and limb and News reports about the risk of being decapitated by flying shards of red hot molten brass / copper maybe even steel (just to be on the safe side)  and then being scalding by superheated water I decided after completing a full safety Audit on the Launch

To take my steam Launch to Lyn Tegid Or Bala Lake to have a play with , Sorry not play, no we must not play with potentially dangerous fast moving projectiles in the water must we.

As you can see on 1 of the pictures my son said he would take the risk to make sure it was running ok as I stood well back using a telephoto lens to capture the image, you can see that he is fully prepared with a flak jacket and cap.
Also as you can see we took, not 1 But 2, Yes 2 safety support boats (just encase the flying metal sunk one of them)  to follow in close support..

I would like to also point out at this stage we had been warned by the Warden that the winds were picking up somewhat on the lake , so you can see this was at great personal risk to us to capture these images for the forum.  (see SubNote)


Sub Note..
I would like to point out that the warden was very pleasant and was only advising us of the condition nearer the middle of the lake  Not Stopping us , Just advising, I am experienced in Lake kayaking particularly at Bala  and have kayaked it in all conditions and I can tell you these conditions change direction every few minutes at this lake !!  Talk about a lake with Attitude when we have our 2-way swim there the wind is Always against me going down the lake.. Then Someone switches the fans the other way and I get it against me all the way back  6 Miles of Fun… Personally I blame Stavros, Not sure why but he’s not been blamed for anything lately so there we go..

And then can you Imagine my surprise when this great big thundering thing “Holy War”  using what can only be the largest Foggy I have ever seen as I am sure that due to Health & safety a real steam plant would never have been allowed to come within feet from where we were without a warning..

or did the romance of the welsh hills become too much for ya.

Humor is what keeps the steamer under enough pressure to come back sailing with burns on his fingers!

Well there I was driving along the M56 and at the junction the car just veered off towards Wales.

Hi kibo, surprisingly deceiving, those waves, where we were was relatively calm, 150 meters out it becomes quite choppy as we were protected by the headland .

It looks great on the water although in one of the photos I was a bit worried it had decided to set sail in to the sunset, never to return. What design is it, did you build it from scratch or use a commercial hull and what are the engine and boiler? Cheers, Ian.

Well done for making it safely back to tell us your rendition of the harsh and dangerous world that is model steam- and I pity you having to put up with that thundering beast; a travelling time bomb, look at all those ignorant punters in their carriages, if only they knew......

Yes Me too, although it is not clearly visibale on the water in that area the wind was quite strong and I was having trouble turning it back inland, however after a few moments more it did start to turn and head back to shore..

The Lady Jane / Ann is a 50inch Windemere Type Steam Launch, this was a kit produced by Modeen and is powered by a Modeen Crompton Boiler & Super Mini twin engine, and although I would lke to say I built it, I did not but am now the Guardian of this vessel, this was a picture of it taken a couple of years ago at our lake in a secret location..

The only thing I do not like is the boiler outer casing, it looks to mamod to me and i was wondering about trying to cover it , Somehow.

I will be sailing my boats at New Brighton lake, my campaign is far from over. Regarding the comments about red hot shards of metals assorted, Most of my counter statement to the BBC was edited out, however I will not let those Pratt's keep me off the lake. My new engine is ready to go in a boat (see my latest post and photos) hopefully, It will be in a boat and on the water before the summer is out.

Apologies for raving long build, what I meant to say was, Nice boat, want to do something similar myself. I remember Modeen, I had their catalogue years ago but couldn't afford one (kids, mortgage etc got in the way) There was another company doing Windermere launches at about the same time, but the name escapes me. the only ones in kit form I can find are by Krick, so I shall do one of those.
