What Servo size?
« on: November 24, 2011, 10:04:43 am »

Hi All,

I am wondering what size of servo to use on my model. I am installing a rudder approx 20x20mm , does the torque power of the servo need to be increased with size of rudder and boat? or do they handle most jobs. I am limited to using a micro servo and I am probably going to order a Spektrum DSP60 which has a torque rating of 1.0kg/cm.

Any ideas please.. 8)GN

There is considerable torque on forcing the rudder blade through water. If you want to keep the small servo then adjust the rudder linkage to your advantage.

Keep the the servo arm short , whilst increasing the rudder arm's length. this may reduce the throw, but be acceptable enough for driving.

Hope this helps

Hi GN,

Make sure the ruddershaft is at about 1/3 of the rudderblad length, the forward part balances out some of the torque needed to turn the rudder.

20 x 20 mm is rather small for a rudderblade, a micro servo should be able to handle that.
What size boat are you working on?
Pictures would be nice...

Regards, Jan.

Thanks for your comments guys, that helps alot, will do trial and error I can afford to make adjustments on the rig when the servo is installed.

As for the size of model, it is 48cm in length and I feel the rudder is adequate, especially if I set the rig up with the correct length rods etc. If you want to have a look at my pics, they are on my post (What if model too heavy?) Beginners...also.
