Hielscher Mini Steam Engine "Andreas"
« on: December 20, 2011, 08:26:02 am »

Hi,

Anyone has a good or bad experience with an "Andreas" engine?

http://www.hielscher-dampfmodelle.de/cms/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=1&category_id=81&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=38

I need a very light engine and very light boiler to power the "Medea", if possible...

Feedback welcome.

Thanks

Gilles

Giles, I have no experience with the engine but it does look interesting and the price is reasonable. I like the paddler version too.  I was intrigued by your mention of Medea. Are you planning to build a steam powered version of the Deans Marine Kit? Is that 870mm long from memory? I looked at the kit when I first read about it but decided it would be too difficult to steam power it so I bought a hull from Kingston Mouldings which he had modified to build a similar type of steam yacht. It is 1070mm long. If you go to his newsletter page http://www.kingstonmouldings.com/newsletter.htm and scroll down you will see a photo. I also bought two books about Medea from the San Diego Maritime Museum which have some useful photos and drawings. I have not yet found plans for her but will keep looking. I just need to find plans of the superstructure. I have powered mine with an SVS double acting twin oscillator and a 6" x 3" (150 x 75mm) boiler. I have had the engine running but have not yet tried it out in the water. I did try a floatation test before I fitted eveything in to the hull and it looks like I will need about 3kg of ballast. I will take some photos of mine when I try it out and look forward to seeing photos of yours. Best of luck with your build. Regards, Ian.

Salut Gilles
I don't have a Hielscher Engine but saw once an exemple running at an exhibition. They seem to provide a very good value for money. Last but not least: Hielscher has a 40-year history with good reputation.

Hi Ian,

Yes that's the plan.  I was interrested by the Peter Boele but Medea was nicer. I thought Medea was same size as Peter Boele, I realized later it was only 12 cm wide  {:-{, which is not much. The most difficult is to find everything lighter (boiler + engine + gas tank...etc) as the total weight should not exceed 1,75 kg, the hull is already 290gr empty...

... I though a Saphir engine from Anton could fit in the norrow hull, but with the boiler it's already more than 1 kg. The big "?" is the weight of all the cabines etc, I'm going to make these in wood, lighter than the plastic parts in the kit. If I find a reliable engine much lighter I should be able to gain weight and have the hull within its water line.

The Andreas is only 40gr and the Hielscher horizontal boiler is 116 gr + 30gr (water), with that set I gain 880 gr. But the boiler is a very small capacity, so I might order another boiler in between the Anton and the Hielscher in term of capacity.

I carry-on searching for the most suitable configuration.

Thanks for your input Kaspar !  :-))

Maybe this would be an option. Unfortunately it's only available in vertical configuration, so it might be of no use for your purposes. In a German Forum was kind of a review of this boiler and it says that quality of the boiler is good, but the ceramic-burner rather not. It is also available with fuel paste (or pellet) burner  which I guess will be lighter.
Cheers

Do you know the Kassner engines? They say that  are made for boats up to 75 cm....
