PROPS SUITABLE FOR STEAM ENGINES
« on: January 04, 2012, 09:26:55 am »

Hi, I am sure I have read in a posting here on Mayhem about props that have more pitch than their diameter, about 1.4 : 1 if I remember correctly. Despite scrolling through both Steam sections I cannot find the earlier post. I have been buying Raebosch props from Float A Boat in Aus and they are fine, very well made, but the pitch on all sizes is more or less the same as the diameter. Coming up are two projects with hulls that will not have enough room underneath for large props but I would still like to load the engine so that it does not rev too high and consume too much steam and a prop with lots of pitch would be ideal. If anybody can suggest a supplier or point me towards the previous post I would be greatful. Thanks, Ian.

I bought a 2.75" x 4.1" from prop shop. It is for a 3foot+ S. L. Wear and a TVR1A engine. I can't yet tell you if it works but my reasons for getting it were the same as yours. I'm a few weeks from running but if you watch my thread on clinker building guide on model boating I will report when tested. The plans suggest a 6" pitch but props shop only listed a 4.1" pitch though I have since read they will make what you wish. They took 3 weeks but a nice job worth waiting for . Regards jerry.

Thanks for that Jerry, I have been following your clinker build thread and will continue to do so. I think you will find that the 6" pitch mentioned on the S L Wear plans was probably for an old fashioned long stroke single cylinder engine which were what was commonly used in the days when those plans were originally drawn up. I take it you have seen the thread about props for the TVR1A which is locked at the beginning of the Steam section? I have a Graham Ind single cylinder (half of the TVR1A) in a Kingston Mouldings River Queen (35") with a WADA reversable prop. From memory the prop specs are 2.25 dia and pitch 1.3 times dia which makes it 2.92". If my single cylinder turns that easily then your twin should be fine with the 2.75 x 4.1". Will look forward to seeing the results when the Wear makes her maiden voyage. In the meantime I will do a search for the Prop Shop. Thanks for your help. Ian.
