Anyone recognise this;-
« on: January 27, 2012, 11:42:07 pm »

This hull is sat in my mates model shop, and he has a notion to resurrect it. It is about 6 ft in length and about 15 inches beam, with Gancia Del Gancia written on the side. Can anyone tell me what it is, what size engine would be required, ( thinking along the lines of strimmer engine or similar) what other kit will be needed as regards rudder etc, and where to get any specialist bits. it would appear that it needs a flexible shaft as the outer tube is curved, unless it has had some sort of trauma in its previous life. any advice and tips would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Nick :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi there,

I am not sure what the hull is, are you sure it is 6' and not 51" or so? Guessing might be an early warehousehobbies hull or similar, but the clue is in the D9 on the side, I am guessing it has been raced / registered with OMRA at some time in it's life, and if you get hold of them through their website it will be pretty easy to track down previous owner who has owned it who will tell you exactly what it is.

However, and to answer one of your other questions, lookoing at the transom it has been previously rigged for surface drive hardware, so you need a rudder, surface drive strut and maybe trim tabs - get them later if needed.

As to engine, it is likely it has had a two stroke strimmer or similar motor in at some time in life, I'd advise ytou go a bit more modern and look out for a second hand (or new - not knowing your budget on this) Zenoah 26cc motor and pipe.

That will be enough to get it moving well.

Would be nice to see it restored and running again.

Meant to say D6 not D9. I have contacted OMRA to see if they can track down the previous owner and see if we can get some info up here on the hull.

D6, according to the nice folk at OMRA (JKD), might at one time have belonged to Simon Beament, I willl email him and ask - but the favourite for identifying the hull so far is that is an old Agnew Hull, possiblt Miss Enfield, though seems the deck might have been replaced.

Do you have photos of the underside too?

Yea same boats i believe.I notice this one has same problem my friends had with the deck, that can be sorted out if you want to ?,i fixed one for a friend, been so long the deck can slump over time, this is the downside of poly resins.
If this ones a 20 yr old boat as suspected  its actually in good condition,i removed the deck and installed some plywood formers to bring my friends back to shape ,you could also install a small bulkhead or push some noodles in the bow and try and force it back into shape that way, applying some gentle heat from a hair drier might help too.
The deck on the one i repaired had no glass on the seam so it popped off easy just using a sharp knife and some wedges.I think they come as a kit unjoined so yours may or may not be glassed inside at the seam, most seem to just use pu adhesive as the lip is quite large so plenty of gluing surface.Overall theyre decent boats and will go well with a single motor but better with an inline twin if you can stretch that far  ;).

Way back in the mid 80's I dabbled in OMRA myself, when Willen Model Boat Club at Milton Keynes was the hub of racing,
and I can vividly remember Tony Ellis (model marine supplies torquay) building and racing these hulls,
with simple submerged straight shaft drive, powered by a big Webra 90 glow motor it went very well, winning regularly.
They were named 'Shead' after the fullsize designer/racer Don Shead, not Cigarette,
this quickly became known as 'The Shed' and there was a shortened version that had a comical nickname that escapes me,
possibly 'The Lean Too' hope this may help.

Ooops, humble apologies gentlemen, Martin is absolutely correct,
I missed the give-away twin parallel raised rails down the foredeck on my blurred little home monitor,
all became clear this lunchtime on my works pin sharp 22 inch Apple monitor.

What really fooled me - I have a great interest in old Italian powerboats and in the 80's scratch built and still own
a semi-scale working model of the original Gancia dei Gancia mono offshore racer, the blue & white one with 3 big F1 car style airscoops,
predecessor to Buzzis famous red & black Gancia mono, with big wing on pedestals above the crews heads.

Around that time a guy raced a Shead at Milton Keynes & Canvey Island with similar paint job & 'Gancia' graphic to our above boat in question,
I am thinking did he also build our Cigarette? and perhaps have a matching pair of big mono hulls??
surely someone out there remembers, I think he came up to the Milton Keynes OMRA races with the group of racers from Essex.
