Which Shovelnose
« on: March 04, 2012, 02:24:50 pm »

I want to build a shovelnose hydro but cant decide on which one, so I'm asking for others experiences

So far my short list is

1. Billings Slo Mo Shun IV
Research indcates the design is flawed and needs modifications to work well

2. Osborn Miss Canadiana
Not managed to find much about this one

3 Astec Notre dame
Not managed to find much about this kit but it seems Astec models themselves are highly regarded

My question is this
Which one would you go for/avoid and why?
Also.... are there any more in the same price range I should consider?

Yes its the one thats top of my list at the moment
I have dropped them an email to find out a reccomended setup as the kit is just the Hull

There is also the Miss Supertest  III from osborn models that is tempting if a little pricy

If your looking for 1/12 scale these Garry Finlay kits are very popular right now. Excellent instructions and they include the resin cast details parts. There are builds of these going on at different forums right now.

The best source in my opinion for 1/10 and 1/8 scale laser cut kits all reworked from Newton plans is ML boatworks with over 80 hulls and more being added.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the links.  Living in Finland means that every package from the US incurs a handling fee of at least €27 even if there is no duty to pay.  They charge me €27 to tell me there is no duty lol.

I Have decided I will go with the Astec Notre Dame
I contacted them to ask a few questions and the reply was extremely helpful with plenty of suggestions for setup etc. Also having read nothing but good things about the company on here and elsewhere, I expectl that the aftersales service will be as good

You never said what size you wanted but true scale boats dont cut it as far as speed and handling goes.Best wooden t boats are the zippkits boats and blazer marine lauterbach, propper race proven boats but not scale.
Theres also glass hulls available including my own design the Comet, not true scale but a proven performer and can easily be made to look scale with some work.Shipping to you isnt expensive either.
heres a customers boat on its maiden minus cowl as he hadnt fitted it yet,she runs over 60 mph even in choppy water.

+1 on Zippkits and the Blazer boats, excellent kits with great instructions.
Good luck on your build and welcome to the dark side. :-)

Well i wouldn't recommend the "Tornado 80" by Equipage. It's cheap &  it's heavy & the symmetry is all over the place. i have spent a lot of time & money on it, fixing cracks, fitting new propshaft, re- varnish, new rudder, install water cooling & revamp the cockpit for the dog! I will keep an eye on this thread as i like the shovel nose & i will replace my Tornado as long as i can fit Ralph in it  %%

I'm in the process of 'doing up' a rather messy Tornado 80 I bought (cheap) at the beginning of last year so I'll let you know how it turns out and runs. Looks like it has had a burned out motor in it at some point, I will be adding water cooling and a Feigao 540L12 motor with 3 or 4 Lipos to power it. I wonder how it will compare with yours Tombsy? How did yours run? What's your power source?
Cheers,
Ian.
