Krick Victoria with SVS engine and Maccsteam boiler
« on: March 25, 2012, 05:47:27 pm »

My Krick Victoria has finally sailed this afternoon at New Brighton lake. Heres a couple of observations for comment. She runs out of steam quite quickly, so needs to be stopped to allow the pressure to build up. Boiler takes about 20 mins to raise steam to 40 psi, not the 8 mins sugested by the manufacturer. I am wondering if the attenuator is restricting the gas flow, even though it was wide open. The plant has not been run for 6 months or so, maybe the needle valve has become corroded. It ran on the bench yesterday for about half an hour without running out of steam, but it was not under load. I am using a 55mm coarse prop, would a smaller prop help, I have a 45mm one with a finer pitch.
Regards to all,
Nick :-)) :-)) :-))

The smaller prop will allow the engine to run faster and consume more steam.
I suspect you have a gas supply problem. If you are able to fit a pressure gauge in the burner feed line you should be able to see what is happening.
Just a thought - check for cobwebs in the burner air holes! I had that problem once with my patio heater.
Good luck.

Thinking along those lines myself, time to take the attenuator to bits methinks.... :-)) :-)) :-))

Nick, I have recently test sailed a Kingston 42" long hull with an SVS engine and was really surprised at how much power it has. I started off with a 1 & 3/4" three blade prop. The engine revved like crazy and when any throttle was applied the speed did not increase, the prop just cavitated. Next went to a 2" three blade which helped a bit. Then tried a 2" four blade which gave good performance but I still feel that the engine can pull a bigger diameter prop. Without sending to the UK I cannot get a prop with more pitch than the diameter but I suspect that say a 2" prop with 2.5" pitch would be a big improvement but I still suspect that I will end up going bigger still in diameter. I was running between 30 and 40PSI all the time. Mine is the bigger bore (10mm?) version of the SVS and I have a 6" x 3" centre flue boiler and after 20 minutes running the boiler was still safely above the minimum level. If you you have the 3 & 1/2" Maccsteam boiler I would think you could easily expect  25 to 30 minutes. Hope this helps, regards, Ian.

Had another run on Sunday before taking steamplant out again so I can finish the build. She went a bit better this time and didn't run out of steam as fast as last time. I had a peek inside the attenuator and, surely enough, the diaphragm was stuck down with some sort of deposit, and the piston/valve assembly was also gummed up, gave all a clean and reassembled, works a lot better now .Lesson learned...don't be lazy and go and buy distilled water instead of using corporation pop. Kiwi, I also have the 10mm version, quite a powerfull little engine, and great value for the price. I am going to get the 8mm version to put in my Anna launch. I will post some photos when a camera becomes available, meantime, a link to Sundays video :-)) :-)) :-))

Ban lifted. I am quite pleased with the way she goes, sounds proper too! All dismantled again now so I can finish off the cockpit woodwork and get her painted. Hopefully she will be finished in time for summer.:-)).

Very nice! I hope mine turns out half that pretty.  Where did you find the figure (doll).  I have been searching Ebay but found little that is satisfactory.  I'm thinking I need a 7.5" (19cm) doll to be at proper scale?  I like the canopy too.

The canopy was one of the wife's washing up cloths which I sort of borrowed....

The doll figure was a donation from my mother and was a toilet roll cover, believe it or believe it not...my old mother was a stickler for that sort of thing, an uncovered toilet roll was a sight nobody should have to see.

Muleears, Krick do a range of figures to go with their 1/20th scale steam launches, one of them comed with the extra fittings kit, which also has the brass framework for the canopy.

Hi all, job done, I am quite happy with the finished job, one or two minor blemishes but I will sort them as time goes by. Just need to find some suitable figures now and a few odds and sods to clutter up the cabin. :-)) :-)) :-))

On the water photos tomorrow, all being well.....

Many thanks Derek, enjoyed the build immensely. A Tug next, Graupner's Bugsier 3, will be arriving on Tuesday, UPS permitting, just to keep me going until the golden eagle provides enough dosh for a boiler to go with my PMR V twin, and then another steam launch methinks. :-)) :-)) :-))

have you thought of removing the gas attenuator valve completely, I have heard of so many people having problems with the diaphragm type ones see if you can get hold of one of the electronic ones, also tap water can be a killer in some area's of the country

Hi there HS, I am going to remove the attenuator, it doesn't seem to do much anyway and needs constant adjustment, not, I think, a good 50 quids worth, I will be on the lookout for an electronic one. I use distilled water from Wilko's in the boiler to avoid any furring up. I am getting about 25 minutes from a boilerfull of water going at a nice steady pace.

SVS engines were originally made by Stour Valley Steam, but are now manufactured by Tony Green Steam Models in Lincolnshire, they are quite powerful little engines and great value for money. :-)) :-)) :-))

Er...  are you sure about that link?  Doesn't look like a normal Youtube address, in particular the .be suffix.  I haven't tried it, so it might be fine, but it worries me a bit.  Anyone else tried it successfully?
