Looking for inexpensive RC ships
« on: April 05, 2012, 04:21:00 pm »

Hello from Boston, Massachusetts! I have been fascinated with boats and ships all my life and recently acquired the chinese-made remote control "Sovremenny" class destroyer that most of us are familiar with. I live across the street from a HUGE reflecting pool http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/media/95757/The-Mother-Church-and-reflecting-pool-Christian-Science-Center-Boston , and there a small community of people who come out on weekends to put this pool to good use!

I was wondering if anyone could point me to a good inexpensive place to start- I am in college, meaning I'm super short on time and money :( I'm very interested in warships, but also other functional ships/boats as well. Thanks!!

Hi John,

Welcome to the 'Mayhem!'

How are you getting on with the Sovremenny?

Welcome to the madhouse.

A great, inexpensive way to start is with a springer type tug. There is a thread on here devoted to just those with lots of ideas. You can let your imagination run riot on superstructure built onto a standard form hull.

Thanks!- I'll look into that, although I do have have extremely limited space and close to no tools... any ideas for where I could for something more ready to run? I can do some work, I just won't be able to construct anything from scratch.

@Martin, the Sovremenny is great, runs real well, hasn't fallen apart yet, a surprise for something so cheap and made in China. Some of the smaller plastics details are breaking/falling off, but I saw on this forum that there is a plastic model that is the same scale as the RC version.

Thanks again everyone for all the help! This is a great resource!

thats a beutiful lake near you, Im poor so I can help you with building cheap. I scratch build all my models as i cant afford a kit or even the RTR stuff. I use the most basic of tools, mainly a stanley knife, junior hacksaw, sandpaper, a small handful of minifiles, a bunch of allen keys, 3 screw drivers, a drill with bits, soldering iron with solder. A pencil and ruler is handy too, After writing it out it seems now like an extensive and expensive list but can mostly be aquired under £40 ($63) and no doubt cheaper if you purchase from ebay. Of course you acquire tools over time when the job requires.

How we can help depends on what you want to do. For example you can take say the seaport tug and convert it to use fully proportional RC equipment. Martins build is a perfect example:

or you can take an RTR boat and just make it more aesthetically pleasing and leave the standard radio and hardware:

Have you seen any boats you would like to convert? One thing i would say though is dont bother with the NQD RTR stuff as people come on here all the time disapointed about its slow speed and what to know how to make it faster. The answer is allways the same, it requires loads of money pooring in and the result is still disapointing.
