Stuart Turner 4000 boiler and burner info
« on: May 09, 2012, 03:01:19 pm »

Hello All.
I am seeking info on Stuart Turner type 4000 boiler and burner set.
I have a new boiler but no flue or burner , so I especially need pictures , so I can make a new flue and source the correct type of burner .
If anyone has some spare /for sale items of course , then that would be good too .
Thanks.

Duncan,
I think that you are going to be lumbered with one of the big dia roaring type paraffin burners to fit that big fire tube, unless you make a ceramic type burner to fit the flue.
In the Stuart Cat pic that I sent to you although the boiler is smaller in dia it has the Primus type burner fired by paraffin into the large dia tube.

You must remember that your boiler is of the era of large paraffin burners.
If you decide on that type of burner I can send you a pic of one that I have used in one of my early my Flash steamer experiments.

What is the dia of the fire tube?

The fire tube is only 1 1/2 inch , there is a catalog listing for the boiler , and a gas burner for it .
It looks a bit like a gas blow torch neck mounted in a turned disk , but there are no dimensions for length and jet size .
This boiler is slightly later than the one in the picture , it is a type 4000 made for Stuart by Cheddar .
It is new , and seems perfect for my D10 if I can rig up some sort of burner .
I may just try one of Maccsteams 1 1/2 inch types .

Duncan
If you look at Micks build of Wide A Wake  you will see the burner that he used

Burner & Boiler pipe work.

This is a burner head from a plumbers blow lamp that I suggested he had a look at in any D.I.Y store
It's just a steel tube with the end jet holder that has a series of holes in the end to draw air.
His fire tube is 1.25" I/ dia and works well.
I think Mick bought the burner head and cut it of to make his own holder, you could have a look at one and it would be easy to make one.
This is a pic of the burner and a pic of the old style burner that I have in my boiler which is the same as Micks.

Hi Duncan,

Do you know what the steam raising surface area of the boiler is?

I've made a number of "plumber's" type burners of various sizes for my experimental boilers and tested a range of jet numbers.

I've made straight ones and 90deg ones (see photo). Generally the main part is stainless steel of 33mm diameter with a air/fuel mixing tube of 12.5mm dia. and 80 to 100mm length with air inlets either side of the jet.

I use a mesh over the end of the burner since it stops flame blowback to the jet. The mesh also prevents the flame from lifting away from the burner, which is often the cause of the roaring noise.

I've been using the gas cylinder inverted, since this prevents it from freezing up and dropping the gas pressure.

Very interesting gents.
What size of jet do you run in your burners ?
I found a picture of the scary looking original unit (which I intend to copy , other than the scabby looking rubber hose !)
does look very blowtorch like .
Regards.

Duncan,
It's a No 8 jet in mine which is standard to that blow lamp.
The pic of the original is more or less the same as I have suggested, you could make a ring to fit the fire tube to hold the burner head just as the original and drill a circle of air holes in the back of it.
The other alternative is to make air holes in the tube as Ians burner with a sliding sleeve over the air holes which will allow you to adjust the air intake.

I have found that turning the gas tank upside down to burn liquid if a vaporiser isn't fitted around the flame tube you will get a long uncontrollable flame like a flame thrower,
I have done it and nearly set the workshop on fire.

Duncan,
I found another couple of pics of the burner fitted to a Cheddar boiler in a Clyde Puffer that I built a few years ago,.
The plumbers blow lamp head was held in by a brass collar on the fire tube with air hole s around the circumference, you could drill the holes in the end of the collar if that would be your preference.

Thank You all for the info .
I have repainted and cleaned up the boiler now , and made up a flue elbow from a brass elbow fitting and some turned brass sections silver soldered together .
I am awaiting delivery of burner from Maccsteam , which is a special due to the strange burner tube size .
I will be building it into a plant with my D10 , and some day building a hull for it .

Hello Duncan. I used to be a Stuart Turner stockist back in the early 1980's. I have a 4000 boiler unopened in the box (foam) and a mint open unit that I can get you dimensions and information from. Let me know if I can be of assistance. Dave
