Hello All & what have I done ?
« on: May 19, 2012, 06:21:33 pm »

After recently moving home, lucky enough to be mortgage free  :-)) and almost 50 years young  I thought I could do with a hobby, but what have I done ????  An impulse ebay purchase but yet to be delivered is a 46" long Birchwood and Cabin (which doesn't mean much to me but I liked the Cruise look of it)  I'm hoping it is a suitable Hull to be electric powered.  HELP !!!!  Where do I start ??

As far as I'm aware it's an empty hull & deck. Any advice of where to start and what to fit will be greatly appreciated.  It is a long term project, so no real reasonable money limit, I'd rather fit reliable equipment once.
I realise it's a large boat for an absolute beginner (you should have seen my Wifes face  :o ) but I thought it wouldn't be so fiddly.

Anyway, I've taken the plunge and all comments & advice will be taken on board  (all puns intended  :embarrassed: )

Many Years of Thanks In Advance.

Hi Martin,
You will be warmly welcomed to this site by many members and there is a wealth of
knowledge and advice to be found here - I am a novice myself but have posted here
for advice.
Pictures are helpful  -  a good start..
Is your boat all wood or is that a fibre glass hull?
Plenty of options for electric power ie motors of varying sizes depending on
what speed your boat is best suited for.

Hi Martin,

Warm welcome aboard, we are all novices though so don't worry. In my eyes everyday is a lesson and we all learn something new, I'm just replacing all my rc and electrics including steering and learnt loads just by asking and then trial and error to see what suits.

Be interested to know what you got planned for her.....

Happy Boating !!

One of the first decisions is do you want single shaft or twin.
With a model that size I would recommend twin as it will take a fair bit of power to get her going decently.

Thanks Bob, I guessed that twin props may be required.  Is 6v or 12v a better option ?  (Bearing in mind I've 12v charger & trickle charger) I've really no idea with any size of boat let alone this one.

Thanks for the welcome.  Do I need to start topics elswhere now ?

The hull & deck are both glass fibre (from eBay / Sea breeze boats, Falmouth)  It's a cruise type boat, I've got something in mind like this photo..........
I really need advice kitting it out electric motor(s) props, mountings, everything really!

Not a bad choice of boat to start with then ?  Can anyone tell me what scale it is ?  It's 46" long, 15" Beam, 18" High.

I'm very near Bridgend, any local help ?

They are not exactly speedboats so shouldn't be too expensive for hardware and electronics.

Hi Martin and welcome to Mayhem.    :-))

Here is the info on the Birchwood you were looking for.  There are several designs, so choose one that appeals.

I'm just down the road in Newport on the M4. You are welcome to visit my little model boat yard as I spend my retirement in there every day. I would love to see the mould as I've noticed this guy on Ebay over the years making these and wondered what his range was like.
