Unknown Steam Engine
« on: June 17, 2012, 01:50:53 pm »

I know someone in Mayhem will know about this little steam engine I just purchased at a garage sale.  To put water into the boiler you take off the lid, it stands up on a hinge and there are two little wells inside for candles.  For the logo there is a circle with a big "S" with "U" and "E" on the badge on the engine itself.

Google "USE steam", and you'll get all the info you need.

can oscillating single cylinder steam engines be used for rc boats? i got the impression that they had to be flicked to get started. Also can they be reversed with a valve mechanism?

USE-d to be shown in the model mags configured as in-line or Vee 6 or 8 dependant on the depth of your pocket with all the top connections daisy chained together. Rotation determined by which one you fed steam into. Wilesco and Mamod have/had single oscillators (Midwest still do) for boat power. Singles are unreliable to reverse and self start, Twins (Look at "Patternmakers" latest rendition) supplied by Stuart or PM are double acting and do have a reversing control.

I was looking into the possiblity of steam but they are expensive and i have limited tools so cant make one.  I was hoping an oscilating one would be ok but if theres a chance it wont start then looks like i have to give it a miss.

hi mad mike,

as i say i have had mine for 6 years plus you just tap the piston or prop lightly when steamed up and away she goes. they don't work in reverse, i get 15 minutes run time round our lake. ran  it on one piston for 2 or 3 years ran great, then put another on and not much difference in speed. my boat is about 3feet long a windermere steam launch. tony green steam engines are now run by his son. as you say expensive to bye but the enjoyment i get from mine is worth every penny swear by it :-)). allways use it first when i go sailing %%

Does the direction that you flick the motor determine the way it runs when supplied with steam ?

hi, mad mike

it will only go forward as the steam enters piston. if you change pipe over it will run in reverse. maybe if i had control for switching over it might run in forward and reverse %%

cracking boat that :-))

what i mean by my question is does it matter which way i spin the crank? From what ive gathered of their mechanicals and pressure acting upon the piston that the timing is the same either direction the crank spins.

http://www.animatedengines.com/oscillatingsteam.html

so i presume that if i were to flick the crank clockwise and apply steam it runs clockwise or if i flick it anti clockwise and apply steam it runs anti clock wise

hi

the pressure of the steam will only let it go forward as it enters then it goes through exhaust and thats it, when i touch the prop our piston. some times if you have it cranked right it will fire its self but not always.
hope i have explained what you mean

what a idiot i am Ive got confused and presumed that on this percticualr type of steam engine that the direction of the wheel was determined by the way it was started and it didnt matter which end the steam entered. sorry about that

co2 tpye motors allow this kind of reversing but thats something else

If you look at Handlebars first photo Mad Mike, the pipe that comes from the boiler is connected to the LHS pipe on top of the engine. This means that when steam is applied to it the flywheel will rotate clockwise. To make it run anti-clock, the pipe needs to be changed over to the RHS top connection.

Unit engines are still available from Tony Green Steam Engines http://www.tonygreensteammodels.co.uk/index.php?main_page=page&id=16
or Forrest Classics  http://www.forest-classics.co.uk/

The way they are made they can be coupled together to make a twin or triple cylinder engine which will then self start and they can be controlled by a valve available from Dream Steam. The completely machined kits are about 35pounds but the unmachined or partly machined kits are cheaper if you have a lathe. They are a basic engine but run well and are good value for money. I have sold several and customers are happy with what they got. Cheers, Ian.

I have another question for you----what fuel does this little engine use?   The tinderbox has these two large round depressions in it.  I do not want to use something that is too hot like Sterno or tablets if it is requiring something with less heat.  Any advice???? {:-{
