La Candelaria Bombarda
« on: February 16, 2013, 03:17:50 am »

Hi all,
I am building the Candelaria OcCare kit and have been doing so for almost 12 months since my kids gave it to me for my birthday last year. They reckoned that I needed something to do in my retirement. I am keen to contact anyone who has built or is building this kit as I have a few specific questions to ask. I have contacted OcCare by email as per their website but so far they are rather slow to reply. This is my first ship kit so I am enjoying learning as I go along.

Here are some pictures to indicate the present stage of the build. The last one is from the kit box lid - long way to go yet. The hull and bulwarks are done in two stages. First with 2 x 5 mm strakes and then lined with 0.6 x 5 mm embero wood. Bulwarks completed, hull just started. Hope pictures uploaded ok as cannot see them in the preview.

The kit calls for Cobbler's contact adhesive to glue the embero wood. I have been using Zap a Gap medium CA+ but find in a bit runny and hard to control. Would appreciate any advice on suitable glues.

Hi Ian

Each to his own particular choice but I like Aliphatic Resin
http://www.shop4glue.com/aliphatic-resin-waterproof-wood-glue-adhesive-20-c.asp
It grabs well but not so quickly that you can't position something carefully. There is a Super too but I haven't used that. Anyway it works and the price is ok too.

Thanks Dave, will check out the Aliphatic Resin. Bought some Zaptm Slo-Zap Thick CA at the local hobby shop yesterday. Its a little bit thicker than the medium version but dries in the same amount of time, despite what the label says, and is a little easier to use.

Welcome aboard Ian  :-)) .......Aliphatic Resin is certaily water resistant....& as Norseman says ....
"Each to his own particular choice but I like Aliphatic Resin" & I must agree here as I have little love or faith in Super Glue type adhesives  >>:-(
From your model I doubt she will see water  :o so no problem here
As it is your first build.....you may or may not realise that Newcastle will have a few Hobby Shops....& these people will sell a range of scale wooden planks as complementry or additional to the  Candelaria OcCare kit material......
Keep us posted with images as you progress your build.......Derek

Dave,
No worries about the UK supplier. Have just discovered that I can get Aliphatic Resin from my local hobby shop so thanks for putting me on the right track.

Derek,
You are right, it won't see water, would do a Titanic if it did. We have Frontline Hobbies here in Newcastle which has a very good reputation and they do sell Aliphatic Resin.
