Maggie M My first Radio Model
« on: October 11, 2013, 12:03:14 pm »

I've been bitten by the boat building bullet since retiring in July.

Many, many years ago I built 3 Billing sailing models; Bluenose, Cutty Sark and Norske Love....  work, life and family intervened for some 40 odd years and now I have time on my hands, winter is rapidly approaching (sheesh) and I need an indoor interest.

Build a different model boat I thought.   So I bought a Trumpeter kit of the Battleship Roma, a truly beautiful ship with some 2000 parts including 16 sheets of photo etch, brasswear and timber.  She's almost finished (with the aid of tiny tweezers and a magnifying light unit).  I'll post a pic when finished, assuming I can find out how to do such a thing !

So now.... after checking my pension payments and my bank account (and my dear lady of course) I have reserved a Maggie M (MBE) kit from Model Slipway which will hopefully be arriving in late November.

In the meantime I am doing as much research into the subject as time and the internet allow, and sourcing appropriate tools and equipment.

This is a single screw model but I intend to find a 4 channel radio for any future upgrade and install a lighting, and maybe even a sound system.....who knows, all a bit scary !

That's it for the moment.  It's early days and I've a lot to learn.

As the weather is lousy I stayed in, cranked up the heating a tad and spent almost £100 on internet purchases.... mainly at Action R/C Electronics because as well as lots of fun looking components they also have on their site drawings and details of all the Model Slipway kits with the appropriate reference numbers, details of each component and pricing......BRILL !

So should soon have a speed controller to get the single motor working, an indicator fuse board, a servo to control the rudder, a 15 amp fuse and a 16amp main battery switch.... but I forgot the RFI suppressor, whatever that may be.

Whilst there I also bought resistors and fibre-optic stuff for ships lighting (more on this later) and then 16g wire, other switches and fuses (following my call to them for the correct amperages etc....so helpful) and then bought small tins of P38 and P40 for filling and bonding of main hull from a well known selling site.

I still need to decide on what radio transmitter and receiver set and whether to use a 12 volt or 6v main battery as I would like to locate this item under the on the foredeck.  My concern is the weight (around 2.2 kg) being so far forward.  I may try some dummy weights in the hull when it arrives and check how she sits in the bath !

So much to think about eh?

And thanks again to the Guys offering a total novice encouragement.

So why did I choose this model boat as my first venture.  A Trawler named Maggie M MBE (I'd love to know who Maggie M was and why the suffix MBE )
Lots of reasons:
1 it didn't look too complex having one motor and a fairly flush deck
2 Not too big but big enough to hold the radio control stuff, batteries etc
3 I once owned a boat that was very loosely based on a trawler... a Taiwanese build CHB
4 My partner in crime is called Maggie
5 and there are plenty of photo's on the internet and some quite lovely builds to follow

So now I have to decide how to detail her.  In pristine condition as built; in working order with a crew on board and plenty of rusty bits or as refitted as in the picture above ( if I can paste it).  Whatever route I take this is going to test my ability to the full.

I've seen some wonderful models on the internet with lots of details both inside and out and they do look super with working lights....mmmmmmm !

and while I'm planning my build can anyone help with the wheelhouse details and what accommodation/work areas were below deck ?

That's my tea finished.

Thanks for reading

Good luck

You are starting with an excellant kit, if you look on model slipway website there is a good picture of the wheelhouse interior. The detail in the drawings is very good and should help alot when you get the kit home.

You can either stick to the kit, which is the Maggie M about 15/20 years ago, or adapt it to how she is now which is what the picture is....both are fine boats.

I have one of each ( i bought a nearly complete model of an old fulla that was giving the game up ) and i bought a full kit what i adapted into a modern incarnation )

There are some very good build threads to help you....RJR did an excellant thread last year.....just type Maggie M into the search box up top and you will find a wealth of infiormation

cheers

Chris

Margaret Mainprize MBE was from Scarborough and got the MBE for her work with scarborough fishermens wifes asc of which she was in charge of they raised thousands of pounds for scarborough hospital

Her husband and son built the boat at Campbeltown shipyard in 1988 and the son still skippers her now

Dave

That's absolutely brilliant information....it just adds to the history of this fine looking trawler and I'm sure every Maggie M MBE modeller out there will be as pleased as I am.

Thanks a million

I remember watching them land the fish. I even remember the sound her generator made while she was in the harbour. It's a pitty she's not used for fishing any more.

Guys......this is great stuff.  Thank you.

I'm so looking forward to this project and as the weather is quite horrible today I'm going to do some more planning... and I'm now not sure which to model, as originally launched or as re-fitted....ho hum !

and Ray....if you can find any photo's that would be quite wonderful.

Have a good day everyone

Well..... my current build, the fine detail Italian ship Roma is all but finished (forgot to add all the little boats and planes though)  It was quite an interesting project but sooooo fiddly and delicate.

I have now ordered a tiny motor drive for a working radar scanner...hee hee..... and some assorted A4 inkjet printable vinyl sheets to experiment printing instrument panels, screens and notices.

I'm guessing many of you fine modellers have tried these ?

and does anyone have a suggestion for suitable paints for my forthcoming Maggie M build, matt, gross, satin, red primer, Halfords, Tamiya ? ? ?

Started sourcing various tools....lathe, pillar drill, milling machine, welding gear, machine shop etc

Ho ho ho

This is a fab site for model paint conversions....A chart with 100's of pages which include......Life Colour, Tamiya, Humbrol, Revell, Gunze, Heller, Vallejo and many many others that I've never heard of, also RGB references, sprays and other stuff

View online or download (takes a minute or so)

http://www.paint4models.com

Although I suspect most modellers are already aware of this useful chart....me being a newby !

More research and a few phone calls over the next few days, also off to the big smoke to visit the Shard for my birthday treat !

Regards to all

Ray

Thanks a million for these very useful photo's.....love the flags, and the nets.....cool !

Still awaiting a delivery date for Maggie M but it is allowing me time to acquire soldering stuff, fillers and other bits and bobs..... and more R and D !

I will try and keep up a full build.... perhaps with working lights and radar, and if finances allow perhaps a sound unit.

Take care and thanks again

Not much happening at present.  I've a room to decorate and a few more bits to track down....... Oh how I wish model shops offered more support for boat kits.  I have visited 3 in the last few weeks..... the first was really a railwayman although he did have two smaller Billings kits, next was one in Berkshire where I asked the price of a well known planked wooden tug kit £400 ......when the rest of the world sells it for £300 and more recently a really big store but alas just a few Billing sail boats, some pre-built sports cruisers and as they specialised in aircraft and cars, could offer no real advice... perhaps it's me !

Right then..... more stuff on order, switches, wiring, fuses, adhesives and small tools.

Hopefully I will begin in earnest in a week or two.....guessing I should start a new thread of the build, although it's robably been done to death.... so it might be better to pop the odd  H  E  L  P  post as and when I need it most ?

That's it for now.....back to reading more of your posts.

Well . . . after working on the Maggie M for several months and then moving to Cornwall I decided to sell her almost completed and begin some new projects.  One of which will be posted on this site any time now.  I will close this posting with a couple of photo's taken a month of so before delivering her to her new home . . . a real live trawler man from Torquay !
