Motorcyclists
« on: June 24, 2007, 09:57:11 pm »

It seems from one or two shed pictures of boats that there are motorcycles in the background. Are many of us motorcyclists?  I wonder if the two hobbies go together for individualists. My Cdo hero Uncle Jack was a motorcycle and Model boat man and I wonder if its in the genes or just things that b-minded people (or GOGS) do. SV1000 and K75, me. (CBR900 need not reply, for obvious reasons!) Mark, has Hannah been on the pillion?

hi tobyker, yes hannah regularly rides pillion in fact the first time she ever went on a bike she was just under 2 years old and she sat between my legs on the tank as i rode up and down the cul de sac where we used to live!! ;D i also took her to play group and nursery school on the back of my bike and i am still doing the school run on the bike and we have regular rides into the brecon beacons great roads there ;D ;D ;D), in fact i cant keep hannah off of it she loves the speed and acceleration and lack of traffic hold ups, i think we will make a biker of her yet!!!

The VFR is "Mine" and the Intruder is "Ours".  This is fine by me as SWMBO does not get to spoil my fun on the Honda but we still get to go out for picnics on the Intruder.

The Rocket III belongs to a posey mate of mine.  He used to drive a Capri, wear white socks and comes from Essex, 'nuff said.

My last two bikes were 900 Ninja C2s.
Before that, Bandit 600, XJ 600, GS 550, AR125.

Used to work in a Bike shop so borrowed umpteen others.

Now live in China, I will not ride a bike here. Although I would (for the first time in my life) consider a bike and sidecar.

Being young the insurance puts a damper on what bike i can ride but still ive had a couple.

started out on a suzuki ay50r, aprilia rs125 and moved onto a honda vfr400 nc30 when i got my full licence (soon tried killing myself on it) last year i sold my honda nsr125r full power only covered 4487 miles from new with full honda history.

maybe next year i might be able to get a bigger bike again if SWMBO lets me.

I have ridden a couple of preserved pre-war bikes - very gently - but since being scared sh*tless on the back of a Norton Dominator in the 1960s (safety equipment - RAF battledress and beret!) I have had no ambition for speed on two wheels.

Hi all,

I've got a '02 Buell Cyclone, and for everyday use a Suzuki Burgman. A srange mix I know, but the Burgman is great for getting from A to B in all weathers, and the Buell is just bloody good fun.
The other 'alf has a car, so she'll have to transport the boats for me. ;D
Lost my job of 34 years because of injuries sustained when a car hit me head on in June '05. >:(  Claim still going through, and I'm still looking for a part time job, as my medical pension is less than half what I used to earn.
I was back in the saddle as soon as I was able though. Nothing puts me off riding. ;D

Last bike I had was a Triumph Tiger back in the 60's when we used to frequent The Ace Cafe on the North Circular and The Busy Bee on the Watford By-pass.
Back in the days of the 59 Club.
Happy Days.
Have no wish to try and relive them.

I tend not to think of it as the "wrong" side of the road, more along the lines of

"utilising all of the available road to enable maximimum progress to be achieved in a safe and efficient manner"

If you are lucky enough to be riding on the top of the pennines and you can see the road for a mile ahead I spend a lot of my time using "all" the road.

It is a practise while not exactly encouraged it is certainly not discouraged in all advanced motorcycle training scenarios.

I take it you use "all" the road during an overtaking manoeuvre?

Hello Chaps, I swapped my rebuilt and pristine Corgi (paratroopers motor cycle) for a basket case Triumph T100c many years ago. Spent a lot of money and time rebuilding it and thoroughly enjoy riding it. Don't go on motorways and never take it over 4500 rpm, which equates to around 60mph. It only goes out on sunny warm days and hauls me and Carol all around Norfolk during the summer months. I have no desire to be a missile pilot as I am not brave enough but really do admire the engineering that goes into modern bikes these days. My old thing is very agricultural by comparison to your machines but I just get a lot of satisfaction out of riding it.
NO, it does not leave an oil slick on the pavement when parked up and has given me over ten years of reliable trouble free service. I can't go anywhere without someone engaging me in conversation about Brit bikes and am surprised by the number of women 8)  who talk to me about the bikes their husbands owned and in some cases some which they themselves had ridden! It can be a little inconvenient if I am in  rush to get somewhere but I have met some really interesting people over the years.
The only time I rode a modern bike was when my son brought his Triumph Daytone 900cc triple round for me to admire and invited me to try it out, I declined a road test but rode it round the garden instead... BAD IDEA! Unlike my machine, this 'monster' did not like it one bit. Disillusioned, I attempted to dismount, lost my balance and fell over with the bloody crushing my left leg and trapping me beneath :P... ooh, the embarrassement of it all!
I'm sorry the pic isn't that good but I didn't have access to the better one but I guess you all get the idea.
Chris

A valid point there Bunkerbarge ,obvously if the view ahead is clear and there is no danger to yourself or others , a practice used not only by myself but even the traffic cop who told me that he reguarly does it in his own vehicle .
Oh and it does say on your licence "tear along dotted line"  ;D ;D

Yes of course I use all of the road but only one side of the white line. most of my daily ride is on
the A4  so overtaking for me consist of elbows out to shift the wing mirrors out of the way.

Bunkerbarge I was only teasing we don't have a nice spot like you have. most of my fun was
going to Box hill , Chelsea bridge. Fully appreciate what you say

as I am now 61  with a gut when I lean on a corner its me guts that crosses the line .

Some lovely bikes there, the Triumphs especially.  I cut my teeth on a couple of old Triumphs and BSA's but then I get fed up with working on them and wanted to spend more time riding them.

I consider myself to be very lucky to be on the doorstep of some of the best roads in the country which our greedy money grabbing police have not yet stuck camera's all over and you can still enjoy having a little bit of road all to yourself.  I don't actually go particularly fast but I do enjoy getting a series of corners just the way I intended and coming out the other side with a grin on my face.

MCAT, if you have never done roads like the ones we have on top of the Pennines you owe to yourself to have a go one day.

Come to sunny southern Spain and head for the hills in the Ronda area, spectacular roads and scenery. Do it in April/May, roads empty, weather sunny but cool enough for leathers;

Ouch, reminds of of my old Suzuki GS850G, a shaftie which used to squat when you rolled off, i.e. mid-way round a corner when you discovered the centre-stand lug was dragging already......

Removed centre-stand and fitted Marzocchis after that one, much better!
