Model Slipway 1/16 Trent
« on: August 19, 2025, 04:49:32 pm »

I am very pleased to have acquired one of these but would appreciate some advice regarding motors, esc, batteries and propellors.

As I acquired it it has a pair of anonymous motors, number 54370 341321 printed on the sides of both (65mm long by 35mm diameter) and driving 4 bladed brass props that look to be maybe 45mm diameter via drive belts. I have an Action P94 twin ESC and rudder mixer and the ESCs can take 20 amps per motor. I know that Model Slipway recommended Graupner Speed 600 Eco motors but I'm thinking of trying this with what I've got but was type and voltage of batteries? I have a couple of 3S Lipo's but it was suggested to me that I try out first with a 6v gel cell - which I don't currently have. No doubt it will also need some ballasting so I could use a 3S Lipo with a load of lead to compensate for the lack of lead acid battery?

I look forward to receiving your thoughts, thank you.

Hi Simon, I have the 1/16th Speedline Severn and the Trent you have will need better motors to bush her through the water, brushless is really the way to go I would say. I have always put in bigger motors than needed to get you out of trouble. I use 2 x Overlander T4250 motors 2 X brushless speed controls.
2 x 12V 5000 mAh NiMH. or 12v 3700 mAh NiMH should do.
A friend had the same in his 1/16th Tamar. the batteries do help with ballast. they both had four blade props, I got about 45mins at good speed.
Yes these are more expensive, but I'm sure you could get the correct set up for your 600 motors. the Action speed controllers do not work with brushless motors. these life boats are heavy.
Buy the way I do like the Trent though one of the best I would say.
Well that's what I use.

Is there a review of this kit available anywhere? The reason I ask is to try to find out what mistakes Model Slipway made when producing the kit. My example is a straight build as far as I can see and I noticed early on that the RNLI decalling said 'Lifeboat' instead of 'Lifeboats'. Thats a pity as I am not sure what shade or make of orange paint has been used on the superstructure but it really needs masking and repainting and then a set of the Becc 'Lifeboats' wording used - making sure to use the correct style for the aerial fit/timescale. My boat doesn't have any draught marks. Any recommendations about those? I don't think that Becc do a set but I'm happy to be proved wrong! All 1/16 of course not 1/12. Also a pity that MS didn't include several alternative hull numbers and names? I suppose all you can do is find a photo of your boat at a particular point in time and build it like that?

Another question, this time about the fixed railings on the transom and forward to the steps down to the foredeck. What colour are these? My boat is a straight out of the box Whitby boat. The builder painted the railings white but I’ve seen photos where they look light grey so I’m wondering. I imagine they’re stainless steel but I wondered if they might even be weathered stainless? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Simon

Fairly sure they are pale grey on the Whitby Trent.

If you look at the contrast between kick boards and the grab rails on the rear of the wheelhouse you can see the stern railings are grey.

Thank you. I thought I wasn’t going mad!! And now the joy of re-painting around the life belt brackets with everything in situ !! 😂 Actually I think the toe boards might be grey to if you compare it all to the white railings going up to the flybridge.

Okay. Now I can see whiteness! I suppose it depends on the light in the room where you’re looking at the image. Really good photo though.

A new question - does anyone have an original decal sheet for the Model Slipway kit? I’m interested to know if the red hull trim supplied was just red or red/yellow?

Hi Simon
If I remember rightly when I built a Slipway Trent years back there were no red and yellow trim lines, these were purchased separately.

Thanks Russ, so the boat, as kitted, had just the red hull trim line? I see that the kit includes the engine room hatch and two sided railing with the top of the hatch painted in grey anti slip? My boat is missing all that and had red/yellow trim and deeper white liferaft (?) containers buy original ladder up to the flybridge so no outboard motor storage. I’m trying to pin down a point when that configuration is right. I have to accept that the chap who built it based it on its state as he/she saw it. I think the red/yellow stripes came in in 2004 but has the radar been changed and the 4 dipole aerial on the mast been changed???

Right. I made a decision today. This boat Will be 1996 spec so I removed the red/yellow striping and the hull numbers with a heat gun very carefully used to allow the vinyl to peel off. I also painted over the RNLI house flag on the bow and I’ve ordered some 6mm red pinstripe vinyl to use for red hull trim. I’ve taken the 3 liferaft boxes off their platforms because the original builder didn’t cut them at the proper cut lines so they’re all too tall. All I have to do is make the engine room hatch and the guard rail. Has anyone built the kit to the later spec so might have the hatch bits and guard rails up for grabs??

Simon

I did have a look through some of my pictures and archive stuff, couldn’t really determine when it was changed to have the pin stripes on and the aerial changed to radar..

Can you not scratch build the engine hatch and guard rail?
