Filipino Long Tail boat
« on: June 28, 2014, 01:34:48 pm »

I fancy building something different for playing about with on our little local lake...for years I've thought about building a Filipino Long Tail boat, they look interesting and there's no two the same (which I like).

I have a large scale plastic engine which I can use, but has anyone an idea of what type of hull I could use? (Don't say 'build one'...I want a ready made hull) I'm thinking of something along the lines of maybe a yacht hull (minus the keel) Any ideas, chaps?

I'm pretty sure I can hide the radio gear under the deck cargo if I use micro stuff, so that's that sorted, it's the hull I need. Length..well, somthing around 30'' -36'' ish would be great.

Over to you...

Hull shape looks a bit like a Venitian gondolier. Not sure that helps.

An MTB? Wasn't it a bit broad in the beam?

Maybe this is where the idea came from:

Been trying to post photo of my boat But!! unable yet again.

Most probably because it exceeds the Kb size- you will need to reduce it as its probably in megabytes, most cameras and phones take pics in Mb's not Kb's.

Now that looks to be a contender...nice size and pretty good lines. If it doesn't go for silly money, that's one for my list.

Cheers for that...

No, the long thin single hulled version,  with the car engine mounted on a swivelling bracket on the stern.

A boat without the riggers is called balangay
Thats the only boat I know they use without riggers

Well, having sorted out the geographics of this, back on the topic...anyone have any ideas or anything laying about in their workshops?

I've managed to sort out a hull as a basis to make a start, I'm going to use one of the hulls from an old Lesro Gemini catamaran...24" long will be a real challenge, but I'm pretty sure it's doable(is that a word?) using micro radio gear.

The engine I have a 1/12th Ford V8 out of an old Mustang kit I found in my cupboard, I reckon a 280 sized motor hidden under some deck cargo will be more than powerful enough. A 5g micro servo will swing the V8 to give me steering, a micro rx, an Action Pico esc, and a small battery pack hidden up in the bows should do the job nicely. It means having a conventional prop shaft under the boat, but once it's in the water it won't show. Either that, or one of those little clip on motors might be ok...it's a case of working it out as I go, I guess.

It should be an interesting build...and it'll be different.

Any more ideas/comments, guys?

A 280 might be too much for the P68A ESC, which will shut down if the current exceeds 1A. Rather try a 260 first on one LiPo cell or three NiMH cells. Most micro receivers will run on that sort of voltage. BTW you MUST solder a 0.1uF ceramic disc capacitor across the motor brush terminals when you solder on the wires. These little motors are hellish "noisy" electrically, to the point where a receiver just won't work without the suppressor being there.

Ah, thanks for that advice, Dave...I haven't ordered a motor as yet, so I'll get a 260 instead. I don't need huge amounts of power and/or speed, just enough to look ok on the water.

I've been playing with a few ideas this morning, pictures show progress so far, and the mighty Ford V8 motor.

I plan on squeezing as much of the rc equipment as I can in the bow section, and hide it from view under a pile of fishing 'stuff'...nets, etc.

Watching this build
This hull might be big enough for a bangka
Have always wanted a bangka
The closest I found is a fantail launch 2

Have you looked at fantail lauch 2
Similar hull to that picture you posted up there

Slight change of plan....I managed to separate the motor back into two halves, so now I'm thinking of installing a small Park Flyer type motor inside the V8 and driving it through a long shaft as per the full size craft. It would look better than an external/internal motor, I think. I did have an ideal motor, but I remember selling it to Ian(IanPal)with the little Kilo, so now I'm on the hunt for another.

If anyone has a suitable motor (maximum diameter 15mm, maximum length 35mm) I'll be glad to snatch it out of your hands in exchange for a beer token or two.

hi ya there Rich

I am unsure if this little motor would suit you - but you are quite welcome to it - it came from a broken hand controller from an X-box I think :-) the only markings on it state that it's is a standard motor FP050-FM/2633/DV - then there is a serial number underneath that - SMDN028318 - methinks :-).    I have just tried it out on 6 volt and it's a bit hairy on that - I believe it should run on 3 volts approx.   and it has a brass counterweight on the shaft end which I would leave on for you to extract if you require this.   Payment would be 2 handshakes from a left handed haggis; via a right handed Scotsman or for you mate NOWT ;- - just email your address to me and I will stick it in the post for you.

Couple of pics here to show you what its like.

Rich I can bring it back down next week, and then when you do get your hands on one I'll have it?

That way you can crack on with your build. by the way I've had the Spearfish in the pool this afty, connected the motor and erm.......

I think she will fly  {-)
But those batteries died near on instantly, lucky I have a  a 12v NiMH pack so just about to alter it so it fits.

John..yes please, I can either use it or replace it for Ian's one. I'll pm my address.

Ian...yes please as well. Glad the Spearfish proved...more than powerful! Shame about the battery packs, they were the ones that came with it when I bought it. See you next week mate...

The motor has just arrived from John (Bluebird) could have been made for the job, fits perfectly inside the dummy V8. Next up...wire it up, silicone it in place, join the two halves of the motor back together and finish off assembling it (exhaust pipes/cooling pipes/etc), and make up the long prop shaft. A length of plastic tubing will suffice for the coupling, methinks.

Thanks ever so much for the motor, John...much appreciated.
