Hi there ooyah - I have sent you a reply.

Now, to get on with today's story.

I installed the GPS system, so we could have a few trials.   Off to the lake this morning (earlier than normal so I could make sure the lake was quiet).

Off we went. loaded batteries up.  Set off the GPS system and this time I was in the middle of the lake so I could see a full view of the run.   In my mind I had a mark set whereabouts on the lake where I would shut the throttle off for safety.    Went from the top of the lake full belt.    Model didnt reach top speed though, but went (according to the new GPS 30 m.p.h.) reached my imaginary mark, shut the throttles and she was coasting - unknown to me a yachty had put a model in the lake - big disaster.   I couldnt see the yacht - people stood in my view for the run - anyway, I took out the sail of the yacht - plus part of its rigging.  That was the damage to the yacht.   I didnt realise I took out one of the stabilising fins on Bluebird and bent the front stabilisers on the bow of the boat.  All in all the damage was very slight when considering the speed I hit that model yacht with.    Mind, I will give you this, the yacht owner (a lady who goes to the lake) was not bothered one bit - no doubt I will be reprimanded by the club chairman, and I think model may be banned from the lake.

Couple of pictures - and a link to You Tube will be following shortly.

1.  Course recorded by the new GPS.

2. Picture of her on the Water - pre-collision  %)

Ooouch sorry to hear that, hope the damage can be fixed quickly, to be fair, people would be a lot more upset if you had hit some of the wildlife

Sorry John, your fault for not making sure you had an unobstructed view BUT, why do observers feel the need to get so  close to the edge? And how many knew before hand you were "going to have a bash?" Can't blame this one on Wimmin drivers  :embarrassed:

Think a ban would be over the top (Bad Pun) though. Perhaps next time you should inform the onlookers the time of your run, and do it an hour before that :}  No doubt your repairs will be invisible and won't upset the trim.

Hi Ian

yea, everyone was well informed I was running the model - even the lady with the yacht.  That is why I went down to the lake quite early so I could have about 3/4 hour pretty much to myself  %) .   I think what is annoying is the onlookers giving so informative advice and then obstructing the view.

Glad to say its all repairable - and the yacht only suffered a bent part of the mast and a bit rigging snap.

I will be back down next week with a different mask on  %%   and take a small model down -  :police:  -

hey that is very tempting Ian - I will add that to my list - in readiness for a total banning from the lake.  Hey I just noticed something there - Noble has put a bit of weight on.

I do have a very sedate one I might do next - we will just see if I am feeling adventurous.

Hi John,
Thanks for the reply,

Your G.P.S. at the size you have given me just will not fit into my K 7, I have searched  to find  a small one but with no success.
My son suggested my iPhone but it is also too big.

If you go back to page 9 where Bruce from Boston M.A. USA posted his K7 there is a small G.P.S. tucked away in his K7 so I shall contact him to see where he purchased his one.

I hope that you have not been punished for your accident at the pond.

Thanks again.

George.

Here is a photo of the GPS tracker that a fellow club member lent me for some runs of Bluebird K7, it may be of use to you, the speed registered was 40mph, the water was not flat calm and the runs were short so probably not the models max speed, but a good indicator

GeorgeThe GPS module I used is part of a data logging system made by Eagle Tree Systems. You have to buy the basic logger either V3 or V4 and then you can plug in a GPS module.

The company is no longer in business unfortunately but there are usually some available on eBay etc.I already had a V3 logger and I bought my GPS module about two months ago for about $90 I think.
Even though it's not made any more there is good information on Eagle Tree Instruction manuals.
Hope this helpsBruce

Hi there George

That picture which DBS88 has added of the GNSS speed meter is exactly the same one as I am using.  But, I have been watching a couple of videos on YouTube where people are using their I phones to log the speed - but - there must be something that we could buy that either is bluetooth which fits in the model to transmit to the phone through bluetooth obviously.

I think further investigation on that front would pay off.   I know they don't put the phone in the actual model itself, cos of some of them are in buggy cars & etc.

At the moment I haven't been reprimanded, and, I am sure I won't be.  I reinstated my MPBA insurance (membership) and I have re-read the Rules.   (Plus I do have insurance through the model boat club)

Here's the thing though, rules for the MPBA insurance states:   'any collision between two models on a lake/waterway - is classed as a hazard of the hobby'.   So there we go.....a good few people have said that the lady maybe should not have put the model in the lake in the path of my model - she knows how fast it goes - and as you know yourself, you don't have much steerage at great speed.

I have already been in touch with the lads at a larger lake for some trial runs - so we will see  %)

Dave , Bruce and John Thanks for all of your help and input.

I have seen several Y-Tube videos with a contributor showing a SKY GSM020 speed meter linked to an App on the i Phone and the module fixed to very high speed cars.
Now this module is the ideal size to fit into my K7 and then I could use my iPhone , however the cost of this module is between £65  --to £75  which I am reluctant to purchase as it would be for a one -off afternoon running session up at the Loch and waiting for a flat calm surface.  In the past at the loch  on a calm day I had K7 running flat out , full throttle and it started to lift but I was quick enough to snap the throttle shut and it settled back down on the sponsons.

I have in the past used my own pond where I can get a 7 sec run and an estimate of a 45MPH run over a set distance, so approx 45MPH is good enough for now until others can get an accurate fix on the K7 model speed, I don't think that My K7 will go above 45MPH without lifting, my K7 is 1/12 scale. ( Y-tube k7:3mp4  ), Swans and all.

Must commend John for resurrecting this thread  which has rekindled my interest in model K7 and it appears others also have been prompted to publish their interest.

Just as an after thought there is a book published by Neil Sheppard   ( Donald Campbell  Bluebird and The final Record attempt  )
well worth a read  if you can find a copy, in the fly leaf it's listed as £30.00

I have that book, and it's really fascinating. The analysis of how and why K7 flipped is very thorough, and I've re-read the book more than once.

Well recommended.

Hi ya there - thank you for the heads up about the book.

I've managed to find the book on World of Books for £20 = free postage = so, I have gone for it.   Looking forward to having a read of it.

Hi John,
You being a data collector there is plenty in the book to get your teeth into, It's one of those books that you can read again and again and also as a reference book.

At £20.00 it is cheaper than when mine was purchased more than 20 years ago.

Happy reading.
