Arun Wheelhouse
« on: November 06, 2014, 09:33:16 pm »

Now the Thames plug build for Neil is over it's time to update one of my other projects that has been running at the same time.

I was asked to build a new superstructure complete with a full interior, lights, wipers etc for a 1/12th scale Arun Class Lifeboat to replace the one that came with the model as it was incorrect for the boat the client wanted to depict. The early Aruns had a rounded front and sharply angled front windows and the moulding as supplied was of this early type. The later Aruns had a much squarer front and this was the one needed.

First problem was that the new wheelhouse had to fit the existing coamings of the hull. This hole was duly measured and a building board made to the dimensions.

What was to be the floor was then cut and made to fit with a small allowance to make removal easier.

The access hatches to the lower areas of the hull were made and fitted in place. These are non-opening as they can't be reached when the wheelhouse is complete.

Rear hatch that gives access to the engine room.

Front hatch that gives access to the forward survivors cabin.

The removable floor panels that allowed the engines to be removed on the full size boat were positioned.

Overall view of the floor.

Start on the walls next.

The drawings for the correct sides were scaled up and marked out on the 2mm mdf (my prefered building medium but needs to be correctly sealed to keep water at bay!)

Raised around the floor in the correct position to allow other parts to be fitted.

The front rope lockers cut and fitted.

Windows and recesses cut out and the roof cut to size.

All glued together EXCEPT the roof as the interior need to be made first!!

The three front lockers will hold the switches in either side and the battery packs in the centre.

View from the rear of the wheelhouse into the large space created.

The rear wall being built along with the reel locker and the base for the steps down from the upper helm position.

Door and windows cut out and all assembled.

Tow rope reel made now to ensure the axle hole matches the hole in the locker to allow the rope to be reeled in.

The position of the upper helm position has been plotted on the roof of the wheelhouse.

The base moulding for the steering position was plotted onto a spare board and made by steaming a timber strip to the correct shape.

Whilst this strip was setting to shape a base piece was glued onto the wheelhouse roof.

Base moulding added to the roof .

The access panels that correspond to the ones inside the wheelhouse have been added.

The steering position has been built with many vertical planks of varying shape and size to give the rounded, tapered shape.

Should be Mick as Kenneth Thelwall had the same "squared off" front as Elizabeth Ann.

The interior has had beams fitted to represent the stiffening inside the wheelhouse. These are hollow to allow the wiring for the lighting to be concealed.

The front supports are also hollow to allow the wiring to be directed towards the lower edge of the front lockers.

The bases for the three consoles have been cut and fitted ready for construction.

The main lighting has been temporarily fitted to check that the illumination is adequate.

The positions for the deck lights on each side of the superstructure have been plotted, cut out and the lights (very thin white smds) bonded in place.

All wired up and working.

All lights now fixed in place and working.

A start has been made on the interior fittings.

First up is the seven identical crew seats. One was made and before assembly the seat and back were used to make a silicone rubber mould to allow the set to be cast and hopefully they will all come out the same.

The bases were made from styrene sheet, rod and odd metal bits.

Now we have a set of seven identical seats.

Temporarily positioned to check the clearances are OK.

I must admit that after the Thames is nice to be doing interiors again for a while. ;)

Next on the agenda is the radar scope. This is made from styrene sheet with the surround added using a large eyelet from a canvas repair kit after a little filing to shape.

Assembled and details added.

Painted and ready to fit.

Fixed in position and wired up. This will be illuminated whenever the radar scanner on the mast is operating.

Next in line is a representation of the main engineers panel. This again is styrene with a photo reproduction (courtesy of Photoshop) of a panel on the front face.

Fixed in place of the Port side table and its little secret revealed...... fibre optics to add interest.

That's the indoor workshop (spare bedroom) Derek !!  You should see the outside one with all the saws etc it looks like a bomb site most of the time.

Next installment is the radio stack for the Port table next to the Engineers panel. This was made from wooden blocks covered with styrene and again a reproduction of the full size radio sets on the front plus odds and sods from the "usefull junk" box.

In place inside the wheelhouse.

Next the Pyrogen fire suppresion system board.

This is also located on the Port side table between the radios and the mechanics main panel.

The main helm console has now been built from styrene and primed.

Painted and ready to fit.

Fitted in position on the front table.

One of the other monitors for the Navigators use has also been made.

All the fibre optics working.

Thanks gents, just doing what I enjoy.  ;)

Added some detail parts for the navigator. The maps are of Holyhead Harbour and Anglesey as this wheelhouse is for the Holyhead boat. The rulers, pencils and clipboard are for when the electronics give up the ghost and he has to rely on brains and Mark One Eyeball !!

View through Port side window.

The compass housing and the final switch panel at roof hight added.

The seats made earlier are all now fixed in place, except the navigators seat as I still need to get my hand down the starboard front corner to add the wiring for the upper steering position.

It's only practice (50 years worth). There is nothing complicated in what I do, it's just a matter looking at how to break items down to very simple shapes stuck together to give me the finished part, plus not rushing about wanting things done yesterday.
