S.M. U-1 - Germany's first military sub
« on: September 07, 2015, 01:38:32 pm »

That's a project I built before starting the Nautilus. Old petroleum powered boat from 1906 and actually the first military sub of the Kaiser's Navy. The U-1 was a small boat and today it's displayed Munich, in the Deutsches Museum. Its a large model, 180 cm long and it took me about 3 years to build it. It has movable snorkels, two 750 ml Engel piston tanks, and works quite nicely.

I won't go through all stages here, but I post some pictures of the CAD model and the finished thing. All photos of the build can be found here:

There's a nice piece of lateral thinking. "Why not put a rudder above the hull so it works when the boat submerges?"  Clever.

It still turns like a brick stone. The props are behind the rudders.....

Still, we didn't see that again until USS Nautilas!

I think these early German boats were heavily influenced by Simon Lake's designs.

That is a lovely model enhanced with the schnorkels working! It already looks like a very effective naval weapon despite being the first of hundreds of U Boote.

Did you design this one to be a kit or just a well developed one off?

I have all the molds for the hull, the rudders, the conning tower an some additional parts, but nothing as comprehensive as for the Nautilus. So the stuff I could offer are much more rudimentary. But in theory it could be a kit.

The U-1 was a design based on boats delivered for Russia (Karp-class). The engineer in charge at Krupp actually was a Spanish guy.

Is there any books you could recommend or a open source for drawings?  I'm not a big fan of R/C submarines but this could make a nice static model or an attractive surface runner.
