Royal Mail deliveries
« on: December 30, 2017, 07:53:10 am »

Has anyone else noticed a change recently?

Last week I received a text message on my phone saying I had a parcel for delivery and a tracking number. Now I immediately think phishing scam when these arrive, but this was unusual in that it was Royal Mail, I have no idea how they got my sms address but that is another story. Anyway I logged on to Royal Mail on the computer, put in the tracking number and sure enough they had a parcel for delivery, I gave them a date and the parcel arrived.

I've now received an email from them this morning notifying me they have another parcel and it is ready for delivery this morning. So why have they suddenly started sending out text messages and emails about deliveries and more to the point where have they got my details from? I'm not complaining as such as I use a friends house for a mailbox so its nice to be able to let them know that a parcel is being delivered on a certain date, but even so, is it just me or is anyone else getting them as well?

Ref them having your mobile number.
If you have ever ordered anything from Amazon or ebay, and provided a mobile number for the courier, your mobile number will be with them as part of your record. If ever Royal Mail or Parcelforce have been the courier, they will also have a record. Big data is where records that have ever been put together, stay together on a new big data record. Part of big data is ensuring that only those who need the records have access. There will have to be strong control of direct sales. However, if you ever order centrifuges to process your nuclear fuels, the authorities will know about it.

As to why they do it, it can be automated and is a lot cheaper than leaving a (manual) card in your letter box if you are out, and then holding your stuff until you collect it. Reduced double handling, reduced storage area, reduced claims for lost or damaged parcels. It is also better service as you do not have to wait 2 days before you can drive down to the depot, struggle to park, and pick your stuff up.

Linking all your information together is worth lots of money to sell to advertisers and, of course, governments love to collect data about you - just in case.

Big data is interesting/ frightening. It would be very informative to know just how much big data knows about us. If we include the likes of Google & Facebook I am sure that it is a lot more than many of us would be comfortable about.

Despite all this data HMRC require me to tell them things that they already know from other sources!

I too noticed this over the last few weeks. I've not sent anything with RM for a long time due to their excessive prices, but I know with other companies you can pay a little extra for notification texts and/or emails.

Brian

I'm pretty sure this is a new service RM is offering its commercial clients who use their Tracked service. Your details were passed on by the supplier.

It's a long time coming, RM are in the dark ages ..........The likes of DHL, UPS etc all confirm delivery slot with a text. The best is DPD, always text a day for delivery but best is they give you the hour it will be delivered and 99% of the time it is 5 minutes early, Saves waiting in all day.

This makes sense, when you think about it. Firstly HMRC is not seen as a business that can be developed to increase revenue, so why invest (a lot of money) in big data?
Secondly, if I work for HMRC why push for the efficiency big data could provide? Remembering that efficiency in the public sector = job losses.

Getting people to tell you things you already know is used as a barometer of honesty. They also measure your voice stress. Insurance companies do this a lot when you report accidents.

And there was me just thinking that they were giving me every opportunity to make a mistake.

Mistakes linked with stress are measured as deliberate lies. Every time you speak to them, they are accumulating more 'feeling' about you and your honesty.

Do you know that they are doing this or just that it can be done?

Insurance companies do it - especially car insurance where fraud is very common - people 'adjusting' the truth to get cheaper premiums.

Even in OZ....are we gaining technology with our Australia Post  O0.....for 30 years, I have rented a PO Box in Wollongong.......now, if any mail is ready for collection...I receive an e-mail......since introduction some 3 months this has been 100% accurate & reliable

Each PO Box in Wollongong has a BAR code attached [from the PO staff side]...after the mail is distributed to each box, one of the staff just wave a hand held gun & Zaps the Bar code & hey presto the e-mail is sent

This now saves a 1/4 mile walk just to find an empty box................ :-))

Derek,
Obviously this new system hasn't got as far as where I live in Regional NSW, as I still have to go to the box to find out there is nothing there!
For me it's 2 1/2klms
Then last Friday, with 4 business parcels to post, closed for picnic day! Dopes!
