Noor : A launch based on the Consuta.
« on: January 03, 2021, 04:43:41 pm »

Hello!
One day, I decided to build something a bit different of what is on the market and I asked to friend Giovanni if ha had any idea!
He always has ideas and he suggested me to build a steam launch which is sailing during the boat race between Oxford & Cambridge.
No sooner said than done.
Getting  the drawing  according to the same method , searching on the net to obtain some details and gone to the workshop.
Below the beginning:

I Assume the reason for these odd sterns was to keep the prop high up to avoid damage in shallow waters like river margins, but also to act as a shroud around the propellor , the flat horseshoe rim smoothing out the stern wake so they were able to attain quite high speeds without washing the river banks out.

Nice work KBIO this one is going to be interesting.  Where on earth did you find the hull plans ?

Hello!
You can find everything on this launch by typing « Consuta »  on Gogol!
To be honest, I do not work that fast, but I am glad to present to you , different boats that I built through the years and above all since I retired!
I hate tools over 1/2 Lbs so I spend most of my time in my workshop until my wife pulls me out!

This launch carrying the judge was designed  to sail between the two rawing boats of the two universities without disturbing them. So it was necessary  to avoid the waves although quite a fast speed =+/- 27 MPH. (the steam engine developing 100 HP before to be changed for a « scandalous » petrol one!))
To be light, the hull is made of stiched verneers mahogany. Strange and innovative for this period but efficient .
The concave shape of the stern allows to temper the boat wakes.

A few more pics before the smell of the hot oil!
Kind regards.

Bonjour Kbio,
A 1 cc machine ? I have several JMC machines and I appreciate them but when I see the diameter of your propeller, I do not know if it will be able to push it... To be validated by your tests.

Good evening.
When the hull is ready , the water test has to be done , checking for leaks and eventual unbalance.
Satisfying : Green tag and gone for the wood work.
One of the best time to spend on a boat is when I work out the wood!Regards.

Hello!
The time has come to varnish « La Belle »!
Delicate operation for a heavy-handed like me!

Information:
CONSUTA was commissioned to be driven at high speeds of up to 23 knots whilst producing minimal wash. Her lines were drawn to
achieve this and she was the first vessel to be built with a tunnel stern, which is still adopted by GRP-constructed umpire launches today. CONSUTA’s
ability to travel at speed is integral to her significance.
                        The real size is 15 m X 2.30 x .60 m (water line) Gross weight = 9

Mine is 115 cm L x 19 cm wide and weight is 3,2 kg. Water line being at 26 mm

Below is my first version with a 3 " boiler and a 3cc JMC.
Note the difference between the first version (high castel) photo 1 and the photo 2 (normal height)The boiler cover is too high compared to the original one. She does not roll though although I try toby styling the rudder!
I didn’t have a 2 "  boiler at this time.
Also, on the video we can see that the launch is quite fast on the water and that the bow wave is closed to embark.

Although the rig up has been done with what I had on the shelf, it does not fit properly ! Let’s spend some money again and Let’s do it again! …..
We’ll know more tomorrow!
Regards.

Good evening.
To close the Consuta topic , I post the last test with a 2" Miniature Steam Boiler , a 1cc* JMC engine, and a 38 mm propeller.
The launch is not so fast but a lot safer.
* I intendefd to install a 2cc JMC but by opening some damaged ones , 2 & 3 cc , I did notice any difference in measuring the piston /course. They are all 2.5 cc .But maybe I do not use my caliper properly ....  %)
The last video , I was on phone with my wife = big mistake ! {-)
Best regards.
