"Someone sunk my battleship !" My first ship project.
« on: September 29, 2020, 07:50:24 pm »

Hi,

could not think of a subject title this was the first thing I thought of. Anyway as you can guess new to the forum and thought I would introduce a little project I have picked up. I have been doing a little research on here mainly of the paint and glue type so I reckon I will get most of my answers from just reading the posts. Way back late 70's when I was young we had two Tamiya Cars (RC Planes too but thats another story) and I always longed for the more expensive ones. Now much much later with kids of my own I can afford them and spent last couple of years getting back into RC cars in a small way, buying 2nd hand or nearly new and upgrading/fixing them. My kids are now getting the enjoyment I had when I was young.

Also when I was young my Dad built HMS Belfast RC model (cant remember the scale) and I remember going to sail it with him. This made me think if I can find a little ship/boat project I can have a go at might be a good introduction.. There is a nice stretch of canal near me and also just found a pond that would be good too. So I looked on Ebay and picked up a cheap and rather sad looking Destroyer which was said to be almost complete just needing a transmitter. Looking at it the description was not quite accurate as there are a couple of other things wrong with it.

So with this little project I need to sort out a few things. First up will be to figure out what battery is suitable with the motors/speed controller to test if it works and the deck is coming away from the hull in a few places which needs sorting out. Then do a leak test to make sure it floats and doesnt sink. Wiring needs soldering back on one motor and it needs a clean, paint etc. I had a new transmitter which I bought ages ago for a car project and never used. Lo and behold its the same type as the current receiver so that is fortunate. Also bought a cheap humidifier off Ebay which I`m going to have a go at incorporating for smoke. Also a sound board/speaker from a greeting card. The one where you can record your own message. I figured if I recorded some ship engine noise and install this somewhere its activated by light so can make an easy switch and as it loops every 30 seconds might make a low engine noise. Worth a try anyway.

feel free to make any suggestions or comments.

HFM Type 23 Frigate. I built the second prototype model many years ago, too many to mention. Originally single screw. It has obviously been modified with a twin screw setup. Two Mini Olympus reduction gearboxes on some sort of 380/400 motor, should go nicely. I would suggest a 7.2v NiMh of about 3000mAh or thereabouts.
Two things, the superstructures were originally held down with elastic bands via a hook in the hatch and another in the hull, worked really well. And two, the real Type 23 Frigates seem to be pretty low emissions. I have not seen one making smoke!
Enjoy, they are great little runners.

Thanks for the info never thought I would get it identified as to what its meant to represent. Found videos on Youtube of the real thing and the model is a very rough proximation of one. It does emit smoke too from the two black small stacks. I think I have an old toy tank that has a faulty motor that uses that battery so I might give it a go. Good idea with the rubber bands too.

Helicopter is borrowed from Yugoslav Army. Its pointing that way because it only takes off that way. It doesnt work if its the other way round as it cant go backwards.

It was going to be Royal Navy but its going undercover at the moment.  ok2
