Anyone seen or own plans for Miss England II or Miss America?
« on: October 21, 2007, 11:48:14 am »

Hello all.

Although less than 1/3 of the way through my current build, I'm already looking at the next build.

I saw a fascinating documentry on the UK Vs USA fight for the water speed record, using sucsessive versions of the Miss America against a whole array of UK boats, culminating in the Miss England and Miss England II.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if there have ever been any plans or kits produced for either of these boats? There is a very rough, not to scale at all kit of the Miss England, or something similar to it, but it is well of the mark in terms of scale.

I have an idea of a large model, using an in-line 4 and some dummy engines if there were plans for the Miss America, or a fast electric Miss england.

Many thanks

Steve, if you've got a problem with wood (other thread), fabricating alluminium for Miss England
is going to give you one h3ll of a task ;D

The photo in the link shows Miss Britain III, the masterpiece of Hubert Scott-Paine.
See the excellent model made by G Charles on the Ardingly show photos.
I suggest you try aircraft model shops, they do an aluminium skin (and stick on "rivets") which would be ideal.

Hello Steve Ripslider,

I cant manage to find any plans for 'Miss England' the mono-hull (as yet) but, there are plans for
'Miss Britain'.  at this present moment I am trying to find the article which goes with the build for these plans.   The plans come from Marine Modelling International MAR 2752 and the constructions is of Balsa Wood - skinned with 20 thou plasticard and covered with tissue.  There are also use of self-adhesive matt aluminium foil.  When I find the article in the magazine to tell you exactly what year and month these were produced in the magazine, I will let you know.   I am sure they will still be available - as will the Marine Modelling Magazine on back issue.

Just as a side note in May 2006 in the Marine Modelling International a guy called 'Ernie Lazenby' presented an article on 'A History of the World Water Speed Record'.   Hope this is of some help.

Agree that modelling in Ali would be difficult. Although my dad built boats out of old tin cans when he was a lad, so I guess possible.

I was thinking of doing in wood, then either painting, or using Ali Solartrim, as used on model air craft.

Bluebird.

Many thanks for the advice. Please don't go to too much trouble, I have plenty of time before the next boat gets started!

Thanks

Steve, please will you clarify whether you want to do a Miss England or a Miss Britain.
Your link shows a photo of Miss Britain III and not Miss England II  :-\

Not sure I have enough experience to do the plan justice.

Is there anyone or a company that I could pay to convert these plans to a more modller friendly format?

Thanks

Hi there RipSlider, Steve

I was originally half way through designing and drawing a new 3 point hydroplane for a build for myself.   Because I need a change sometimes from 'grey Naval things'  :).

I then noticed your request for these plans, which I know I have.   I cannot find the build article that goes with them though.

So.....I have now decided to put on hold my hydroplane because I quite look of  Miss Britain   :)  So, I have started chasing or even tracing mmmmm build it out of concrete bulkheads and keels out from the plans, so watch this space for a possible build thread on the Forum.

When I have finished, you are quite welcome to borrow the plans.

It does look a very attractive boat, doesn't it?

And idea about sizes, power train etc?

The original Miss England is on display at th Science Museum in London. You could try running a tape measure over the 1:1 model!

I have around 20 photos of this boat stored on the fastelectricals yahoo group site http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/fastelectricals
