Mtronics plug n play sound unit
« on: April 10, 2024, 09:45:12 am »

  Greetings everyone,
Does anyone have experience of these sound units? I am thinking of buying one to fit into the Coaster Dawn light I am building later in the year. Ideally I would like one that can be transferred boat to boat with my tugs but I'm not sure which unit (small diesel or large diesel) would be the best to buy. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
          Cheers,
                Pete,  :-)) :-)) :-))

hi there

If this is the unit you are thinking about - see link below - I have one of these fitted in the MV Duburg - this is a basic sound module, electronically generated and I think it is supposed to be of a Deltic engine.   It does have the start up and shut down sequence, which is pretty effective.   As long as you have your speaker set up in a good audible place/sound access place to the outside of the model.   On my model the speaker is fitted underneath the funnel in the superstructure and the funnel is an actual hollow tube. See if I can get some photographs later on.

Good units, I have two in a big landing craft (I know, extravagance!). Good sound via decent tubed up speakers, but you do need a switcher to turn them on via another channel. I use a Model Radio Workshop twin relay switcher to turn the sound units on individually. An action unit would do a similar job.
The only issue I encountered, and it is relevant to your question about moving the unit from boat to boat, is the multiplugs on top of the unit. There is a two pin plug and a multiplug that connects to a series of pins poking vertically off the unit. I found that these sometimes make a poor connection. So much so that I soldered a wired two pin JST plug to the speaker outputs, to stop sound drop outs as the connections would randomly make and break. Having done this they now give good service, with the multiplug cables secured via cable ties so they cannot wobble about.
