American FFG Frigate markings
« on: September 29, 2024, 11:52:36 am »

Hi
I'm looking for information about the significance of the markings on American FFG Frigates, specifically the "E" with stripes below it on the side of the Mk 13 single arm missile launcher. Also what do all the colourful (flags?) symbols mean painted on the side of the bridge? Any other special markings on these frigates would be useful to know.
I have pictures of them with the Stars and Stripes flag flying from the mainmast which is absolutely massive, what is that all about?
 Many thanks as always.

I believe that the E with underlines refers to earning an Excellence rating in a review of it's operation. The slashes underneath indicate repeats earnings of the Excellence award. Thttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Effectiveness_AwardThe Flags on the bridge wing illustrate awards won by the ship as well as recognition for service in areas of conflict.
All USN ships started displaying extra large national flags, I thing after 9/11. I may be wrong on the date, but it is now standard practice.

Hi Akira
Thanks so much for the information, very interesting. I will add these details to my model.
May I also ask what the large coloured garland is for on these ships that is draped through the bow fairleads?
 Regards
