Can anyone help me identify this please?
« on: May 06, 2025, 05:33:53 pm »

Hi
I'm a complete newbie to the world of pond & model yachts. So I'm wondering if anyone can help identify the origins of this hull (see pictures).
I picked it up in an antique shop in Petersfield. Initially I was just attracted to the colour and age of it and thought it might just look good hung on the wall in my den. Now I've had it a while and I'm starting to think I'd like to attempt a restoration and maybe get it working again to give my grand kids some fun.
The hull is 23.25" (59cm) from bow to stern and the deck is 4.25" (11 cm) wide at its widest point. It stands 7" (175 cm) from the bottom of the keel to the deck.
Prior to joining this forum I joined a blog called RC group who suggested I contact MBM but had the opinion that it might be a Bowman Gull or it could have been build from scratch.
I want to identify its origins so that I can get an idea of what it should look like and then make a plan to go about restoring it.
Any observations and comments would be most welcome.
Very Best RegardsBarry Colyer

Actually, I suggested that you contact the VMYG, but MBM also has a lot of experts, and is well worth a try...

Hi
Yes my original post did mention pictures but I hadn't realised the limitations around image and file sizes so my uploads failed.
Hopefully I can successfully add some photos in this post.

I'm afraid I haven't been able to identify the boat yet but I am proceeding under the assumption that the yacht is probably a Bowman Gull.

I have stripped the hull back to wood and the keel back to metal. My reason for removing all of the paint on the hull is that it gives me the option to have the hull stained/varnished.

At the moment the deck is largely untouched because I want to ask a few questions about how best to prepare it.

 1. Is the deck essentially the same piece of timber as the hull (but just stained a different colour)?
 2. Regarding pencil lines on the deck: Do you think they have any purpose. The lines along the deck could be trying to represent planking but what are the lines across the deck for?
 3. Essentially I'm trying to think about my next step. If the deck is an integral part of the hull I could just fill all of the small rigging holes and give it a light sanding to remove the pencil lines. After a few coats of stain/varnish it would then be ready for re-rigging at some stage. What do you think?

I would warmly welcome any views on this!

 Best Regards

Those pencil lines on the deck look familiar, as in I may have seen this deck or an identical one on the forum before. Sorry I cannot help you search, but ploughing through old posts requesting help to identify might throw this up.
