Car Heater Blowers as motor for large RC Boats
« on: May 18, 2025, 10:52:17 pm »

Evening All, Im fairly new to the hobby and looking at converting an old large Minesweeper (56 inches) from Steam to Electric power.  I will be using SLA batteries for power and ballast an Mtroniks ESC of 40 - 50 Amp with a Prop of 70mm.  The question is about motors; I was airing towards a Car Heater Blower but have had recommendations from two well known online stores that both suggested an MFA 800 Torpedo which sounds ok to me looking at the RPM specs etc? However can all car heater blowers be run in reverse though: the ESC is capable of switching from forwards to reverse but can all car Heater blowers run in reverse as well? As they were widely used in large Tugs I though it might be more appropriate but only if it could be reversed at will. I would value your opinions, many thanks. Just realised this should be in the Brushed Motor section: trying to work out how to move it there, thanks.

With most car scrapyards closed these days, can you still salvage heater motors?

You can still source them online, Have a look at the MGOC site, you can get a replacement one for about £60 that has an RPM of about 4000 - I'm just unsure if they can also ruin in reverse

We used car heater motors in our larger launches and models and yes they can be reversed using the ESCs. I don’t know about more modern motors in cars but the ones we used were from Vauxhall Cavaliers and VW Golf’s. At the time very easy to remove from the cars in a scrap yard and were cheap as nobody wanted them from a scrap point of view. Now with tighter regulations on scrap yards and rules on recycling you can’t get them in person anymore for health and safety reasons.
But if you can them they are very good and because they were designed for the car industry they will outlast most models!

If anyone wants a motor with truly phenomenal torque, the motor i salvaged from an old electric tyre pump is incredible. 13 poles 2 amps free running. I have yet to instal it in a model, but i think it will cope with even the largest model propellers. It's a heavy lump, but thats not a problem in any large model. I'll do more testing next week and report back.
