Nice one. We dont see the U177s around for some reason. Wonder if one or both will be ready in 8 weeks. My Laff is in bits for a full rebuild at the moment.

The laff will be :-)),hope to have the u177  but not finished, probably no paint or detail. For the laff i have upgraded to the piston tank switch UNIpro (the one with magnets) has anyone set one up,advice appreciated . on the U177 i will fit a 5mm acrylic plate longer bolts and different gasget.I do not think it is possible to make the opening bigger dueto the steel inserts.

Speak with Ramesh about this, he's never had a drop of water inside his Typhoon. I'd recommend you spend the extra on a polycarbonate/lexan lid rather than acrylic. It's better for this application.

Yes I used Polycarb instead of acrylic.

I have friend who works in signs thay use a bulletproof plastic,i cannot remember what it is called. It is expensive but he will get it cut and drilled for me  for about £15-20 pounds.
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: Mankster on April 10, 2011, 04:46:49 pm
Its called polycarbonate....
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: Subculture on April 10, 2011, 05:04:35 pm
Not sure if it's bulletproof, it is about the toughest thermoplastic available, they use it for riot shields and CD's amongst other things.

However it is less rigid than acrylic, so bends more readily, it's also softer (almost chewy) so it scuffs and scratches more easily and is more difficult to polish.
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: Davy1 on April 11, 2011, 10:09:16 am
I would really recommend polycarbonate. I use it always now in preference to acrylic etc.

As long as you're enjoying it as well then it doesn't really matter if it takes two weeks or two years, that's my excuse anyway. I managed to add two piceces of plastic to my U-556, the rail tracks inside the tube, 40mm long each. Six hours of sweat and tears, well tears anyway. I'm aiming for Christmas really, hopefully this year, but i don't want to rush myself too much. 8)

Will start the U177 tomorrow,i will spend most of the long weekend on it,I find it very relaxing.I have noted that thy have changed the cast keel to a rolled lead one which leaves a big gap under the r/c plate so i will cut it down and lower it to give me 10 to 15mm more head room and i can tell you every bit helps

Looks like they have updated that kit a bit. I would be interested to see the wood deck when it goes on, what you stick it down with and if you have to use anything to keep it waterproof.
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: trevor v on April 25, 2011, 10:10:59 pm
The instuctions say pour polyester resin in to recess on deck 1mm thick.excess resin should fill every gap thereby ensuring awaterproof seal between the materials.when set the plankiing should be varnished at least 3 times.

A two-pack polyurethane clear coat from a car paint suppliers would be very tough and totally waterproof.

A question about drive trains and shaft sealings: It seems that IX C has a geared drive and LAFF is direct drive. Would LAFF motor get hot due to lack of reduction gear? LAFFAYETTE kit is fitted with simmering for shaft sealing. What about IX C?

I fitted my SCALESHIPYARD's AKULA II with direct drive and shaf sealing same mood than the LAFFAYETTE (like Ramesh did with his) and it tended to get drive motor hot after an hour and a half running. Do you think it deserves time and effort to consider a cooling system?

Regards from Madrid.

Juan Carlos.

Post by: Mankster on April 26, 2011, 11:16:33 am
Nothing wrong with a hot motor. The one in my Lafayette has been there untouched since I built it in 2005 - I am stipping her down to replace all the seals and give it new paint, and after looking at the motor I am going to leave it there for another 6years  :-)
The IX has the pVC tube slid over the shaft to keep the water out. The Simmering you are using is a better solution.

Post by: Subculture on April 26, 2011, 01:29:55 pm
Doesn't the motor/shaft seal holder act as a heatsink?
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: trevor v on April 26, 2011, 06:42:32 pm
I am building the drive train as standard i will use PVC tube a grease. As it seems to work well as long as you build as instructed.eg the tubing must overlap the drive shafts by EXACTLY 3mm no more no less!

At this rate you will have 2 new boats ready for St Albans. :-)

I am working on a similar scaled sub and am considering fitting real wood decking. Are yours individual strips or a sheet that has beed scribed?
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: trevor v on May 09, 2011, 07:20:19 am
Hi mankster it is real wood deep scribed you can cut into individual strips if you want to.
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: Mankster on May 09, 2011, 09:56:41 am
Thanks Trevor, I have been able to track down any pre scribed wood sheet yet. Gluing individual strips 1mm wide sound a bit of a pain! Another alternative is plasticard that already comes scribed to represent wooden decking but its not as nice as the real thing.
Title: Re: Big Box

Water jet cutter?

Another idea- the wood grain laminate that you get on office furniture.
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: Mankster on May 09, 2011, 11:53:18 am
You mean using water a water jet on a flat sheet to represent individual planks? Do you you know some where that will do a small job like thing for reasonable cost?
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: Subculture on May 09, 2011, 12:59:45 pm
Have a chat with Andy Nightingale. :-))

Another option is to make a master from balsa strips, then cast a rubber mould then mould a complete deck in PU resin. You can add fillers to the PU resin which make it look exactly like wood, but it will be totally waterproof and tough as old boots.
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: nelsona on May 09, 2011, 07:53:28 pm
Interesting and interested, what is and where can you obtain "p-u resin"??
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: Subculture on May 09, 2011, 08:07:29 pm
PU is short for polyurethane resin. It usually comes in white or tan color (although it is usually translucent until it sets), but you can also pigment it to any colour you like. You can get lots of different types of this resin with different properties (hard, soft, rubbery etc.). The rudder and hydrovanes shown In Trevors build are cast from PU resin.

Good UK suppliers are Alec Tiranti (google them), and if you can find a stockist Smooth-on do an extensive range range of this type of resin.
Title: Re: Big Box
Post by: nelsona on May 09, 2011, 08:40:24 pm
thanks Subculture will follow up the info, I have a Type 7 hukk from Darnell and the deck leaves something to be desired as far as detail is concerned, thinking I would do a wooden decking (with balsa) and "stiffen" this, but open to other options!
