The keys to the medicine cabinet are in the third drawer on the right  :P :P :P

The question has to be asked.................

1. Why do you want to paint your boat black?????

and

2. Why do you want to sail it at night???

if i painted my boat black would i see it at night

Yes

When sailing my boat at night I can see the silhouette.

The surface of the water will probably appear darker than the background landscape. As long as you can have the boat between you and the landscape/background, you will see it. Easier with a sail boat.
If there are lights in the background you will get reflection on the water surface, and you will see the boats silhouette against this as well.

There are not many places left in the world where it is truly dark anymore.

At the beginning of WW1, destroyers were painted black for night time operations.  It was soon found that while a black ship could be seen without too much trouble, various shades of grey were harder to see at night.
In total darkness, anything except luminous paint will be invisible.  In faint light, anything that is not the same shade as its surroundings will be visible, even if its only the wash you can see.  Nav lights are good

so what is the best shade of black to use for night time sailling and still be scale
Title: Re: black
Post by: Yarpie on April 26, 2011, 10:45:44 am
Undoubtedly "Henry Ford" black bat44. O0

Back in the early 1930's this was the most accepted shade of black, and was responsible for the cessation of the red flag waving 'outrider' in front of the motor car. Streetlighting was also in its infancy and HF's black could still be easily discerned in the murky gloom. So that would be my recommendation, Henry Ford black with a hint of weathering. %)

As for scale, I would suggest that you build 'in between scales' because if you build to an instantly recognisable scale the more proficient of the modelling fraternity will spot any ambiguities instantly and will no doubt criticise mercilessly. <*< .................

I would suggest lightening black a bit. I have just painted the bottom of a Type VII U-Boat blackboard Black, with the intention of lightening it with Humbrol Tank Grey via an Airbrush. If this is for your RIB I would use a very Dark Grey on the 'inner tube' and a Satin or Matt Black on the 'Fibreglass' parts of the model. Dont darken the black, if you do, light itself will be unable to escape, and you, the model, the local lake and all the members will be sucked into a tiny Singularity..........."POP" :o

Title: Re: black
Post by: unbuiltnautilus on April 28, 2011, 05:09:48 pm
This all depends on the original colour, if it was orange then I would suggest using paint with an orange tint, likewise with blue and green, the same rule applies. As far as visibility at night, may I suggest ex-soviet miitary night vision goggles from "imnotapervertorstalker.co.ru". They are very discreet....aparently.

do i take it your rib will represent one of the mod types regularly seen around our waters ? they appear to be of a satin or matt finish , with a much smaller lighting hoop over the outboards than the rnli versions . will it make much difference what colour you paint it , when the navigation lights are working you will be able to work out its position !
Title: Re: black
Post by: Jonty on April 29, 2011, 02:44:25 pm
In low light levels, as opposed to total darkness, a light colour will be more concealing. That's why many escort ships on the North Atlantic were predominantly white and the Germnas painted their night fighters a very pale grey

Mr Bat have you never noticed when driving at dusk you get the odd plonker who does not know where their lightswitches are
and how hard it is to see their cars when they are grey or silver but a black car shows out far better against the background

Bat44 (did your battery's run dead or ''somin''?) .... I swear sometimes I have seen it all then another bit of stupidity pops up, if you paint a boat black it becomes really hard to see at night,(why the military like to use dark colours!)  its bad enough that smaller models at distance can be very hard to see even in day light!

Seriously though if you had a brain you be dangerous! I could have thought the forum was for serious questions!

As far as serious questions...currently doing the rounds are posts relating to the percieved intelligence of mice (they do not have a seat on the UN, so stupid would seem to be the answer to that), royal wedding (nice Aston Martin, good work ethics), whats your car (Mondeo, different coloured door to the rest of the car, wont bother photographing it or waxing lyrical about it, i'll be glad to see the back of it). This post is a bit of fun with a bit of useful info thrown in, mostly from other people however ok2
There are excellent and informed posts most every day, and there are fun posts most every day, dont let them upset you.."Calm down dear"

I love a good technical discussion, so let us try and bring some science into this topic.

Now, given that in the film "The Matrix", it was proven that bullets coloured light grey were extremely SLOW (I saw them!) and further, that I once had a boat coloured white which did not go AT ALL (whilst a dark grey battleship sailed joyously round it), we can use a simple arithmetric progression for monochrome objects -

WHITE - complete inertia
LIGHT GREY - very slow
DARK GREY - faster
(by extrapolation) BLACK - infinite speed

Thus you can travel completely round the pond instantaneously with a black boat!  Obviously, you would have to verbally inform onlookers that the feat had occurred, otherwise they would wonder why you hadn't painted it white!!

It is all to do with the fact that a black colour is not really black, it is an absence of reflected light when the speed of light is achieved.  So it may be possible to increase the speed of a boat by PRETENDING it is black, or even wearing very dark sunglasses (as demonstrated by sports car owners).
Anyone done any experiments in this field??

Danny

Just spoted this thread.

First a story  - SIGNAL who make naval radars in Holland say they can spot the American stelth aircraft as a "clean hole" flying though the sky.  The aircraft masks the background refections.

In a similar way a true black ship will mask any water surface light scatter no mater how little.  So yes you will see a black shaddow but no detail.

You don't need a handle to paint with a ferret, they are self-attaching!  (Don't wear a glove - you big sissy).
They are best used with RED paint as the blood won't discolour it.
If you are using ferrets in low brightness and out of direct sunlight, an AAA battery with a high brightness LED attached can be inserted into any suitable orifice (a resistor is not required as the ferret does that).  This, not only aids the drying process, but also enhances the self-attachment properties.

Badgers are useless for detail work and should only be used to paint fences - after which they usually give up their life of crime! (No, NOT the badgers...)

Cheers

Wullie
Here's a picture of me on a ferret hunting expedition!  You can just see the wheel of my sports car to the right.
Of course, I may have been younger then - or was it Red Barrel?
