I am building a tug canning by mobile marine models and have a PM research oscillating steam engine 1/2 inch bore 3/4 stroke do you think that this steam engine will b e power full enough for this tug i have a 3 1/2 inch boiler from mainsteam

did you tell Mainsteam what engine it was for? because if you did ,they are a good steam company who know what they are doing and so it should be fine, the reason I say this is that the way the boiler is  fired makes a difference in the amount of steam it produces.,. what sized canning is it ?

the canning 40 inches long by 11 inches yes I did speak to main steam

The P M Engine will push that hull along very well. I have fitted the V twin in to hulls up to 48" long with no problems. I would suggest you use a good big prop so the engine does not rev to much, then it will not use too much steam and the boiler will easily keep up with demand. We have a 75mm x 75mm four blade prop under a 44" steam yacht tender with one of these engines and it could do with a bigger prop still. The Prop Shop does steam props which have more pitch than the diameter and one of those would be ideal. Set the safety valve at 45psi as oscillators tend to leak steam if you have too much pressure. I am sure you will be pleased with the performance and they are very controllable too. Best of luck, Ian.

I would agree with kiwimodeller , don't try to push to much steam through it , and 40" will be no problem at all mainsteam are a good supplier of steam parts so as you have told them you will have no problems looking forward to hear about your build , there are a lot of steam people on Mayhem who will be glad to help if you need any.

with the build and maybe I'll learn a thing or twenty.
