The jolly fellows in my club decided, in my absence, that the Huntsman pictured should be refurbished by me.
For this they extracted the princely sum of £5.00 for my pleasure of doing it. <*<
-
So, I set to with the orbital sander and found the hull was ok, just one joint needs re-glueing.
The prop shaft needs moving of course
-
I have also had a look at the superstructure - it fell apart in my hands!
-
Fortunately, there are enough complete bits to use as patterns for new panels.
-
the prop shaft seems very far forword is this by the plans for an ic set up
-
Hey, I've been given one of those to refurb as well - it's in the queue (no.4) - so it will be about a year away from even getting started however, in the meantime, I'll just tag along and hopefully pick up on how you tackle yours. Good luck with the rebuild. :-))
Regards,
Ray.
-
Today I have made some progress on the superstructure panels.
-
Have managed a little time in the man cave, and got some more superstructure work done.
I am waiting for a propshaft to come before any more hull work.
-
hi nice job you're doing it should be back to its former glory before long is it the 48in hunstman. if so you didn't happen take templates from the superstructure did you :}
-
Yes its the 47" version.
I didnt take any templates, but if you need some I can draw out from my panels before starting to glue up.
-
Superb work......... Really superb.
-
if you could that would be exellent :-)) i have a fg hull lying around but no plans for the cabin extr
-
Today I spent a bit of time hacking out a few more bits of wood for the cockpit.
Some pics:
Ian
-
Its been a while, but other stuff got in the way.
However, today I have made a little progress on the cockpit. Everything is dry fitted at the moment, but you can see what I am aiming for.
The planking is Lime with sticky back plastic for caulking. The rest of the wood is 2mm mahogany sheet.
Ian
-
very nice :-))
-
So, A little progress. Got the cabin roofs on and made a couple of cockpit seats. BUT, I think I got the dimensions wrong on the seats, they look too small to me >>:-(
-
ye they do look on the small side dont they
-
Ian
Scale them up eight times and see if your bum would fit into them - mine certainly wouldn't! I reckon they should be around 3" wide (more to fit me.............)

Can anyone tell me please, are the full size Huntsman hulls finished in a gloss, or a satin finish?
ta
-
Gloss but gloss on a model makes it look like a plastic toy.
Go with satin or gloss with satin varnish (clear coat) finish
-
Well, its been a while since the last update, but I have progressed things.
The hull has had two coats of z poxy, a rub down and two coats of primer.
Before putting the top coat on the hull I decided to do the deck planking first, which I have progressed quite well today.
Cheers

I'll watch this refurb with interest. I love the Fairey huntsman.
Apart from its timeless good looks, it dos still handle the waves an rough water well. It is still very very quick!!!
Thanks for the pics.
Garry
(Ps I run petrol and nitro boats, 40-60 inches in length. The huntsman 46 inch I have still gives me the greatest pleasure when running.
-
Today I spent a few hours in the sun chucking a few more planks on the deck, followed by a rub down with 80 grit, then 120 grit and finally a wipe over with white spirit.
There is a bit more fettling to do yet, but its well on the way now.

Looking fabulous!b

Its been a few weeks since the last update - holidays, work etc.
I have made and fitted window frames, a cabin door in the cockpit and some handrails (to be fitted).
I cut the handrails from some scrap mahogany, each one is two lengths of 2 mm glued together and cut using the milling machine, nice and easy that way.
Ian
-
Today I hacked out a samson post from a lump of stainless steel.
-
I believe it's not any easy material to cut about. %)
Looks a good job there. Well done.

I thought I would make a bow roller next, well, it wasnt as easy as I had hoped. After 2 botched attempts I ended up with this.
(the drill is temporary until the right size bolt turns up).
Ian

So, this week I have done a little more, progress is slow but relentless!
The hull has now been painted and covered with 2 coats of satin varnish.
I have also made a card template for the windscreen and cut slots in the top deck to fix it into. Next, it will be making a screen from 1mm lexan and see if it fits!

Hi
Fab pictures, lovely finishing, your patience and attention to detail will produce a boat unrecognisable from the start point on the project.
-
I fancied having a go at something else today, so, I decided to make some new side air vents.
Fortunately, the ones that came with the boat (wreck) were useable for taking a casting from, which I did in plaster of paris. They came out just fine.
Next, had a look at some peg board for the surface plate. Once recovered from the shock of the price for a bit of mdf covered in holes, I went to a diy store and bought an offcut of mdf for 10p and set to with my drill.
Next, a box was built for the holey mdf to sit on, with a tube to tape the hoover to underneath, and a frame to support the plastic sheet was knocked up.
The first couple of attempts weren't so good, but I soon got the hang of it and am pleased with the results.

When I did my Huntsman vents, I stapled the plasticard to a frame, put it in the oven, and when it went "wobbly" slammed the frame on to the box with the vacuum cleaner to suck in the air from underneath, a mini home made vac former. Just got to make the bottom box air tight with duct tape.
Nice idea with the hair dryer :-)) , this might work for any larger items that the hair dryer struggles to heat up
I made them from clear plasticard, and painted from the inside with Alclad chrome paint. Other where white plasticard painted white.
-
Beautiful work.
-
Tonight I have made the throttles for the control desk.
The main part is aluminium, with the handles in brass.
The whole thing is 20mm long and 20 wide, the slots are cut with a junior hacksaw and the brass is 1.8mm diameter/
It was tricky!
-
very nice loving the scratch built items :-))
-
And we move another step towards returning this old boat to its former glory:
-
Great looking refurb. its nice to bring them back to life and admire all the hard work. :-))
-
Right then I am now a little stumped and looking for suggestions.
I have cut out the windscreen from 1mm lexan and want to create a frame effect around it.
I have tried adhesive aluminium tape, which seems to be ok until I get to curves, at which point it just buckles and tears.
Does anyone have any suggestions I might try?
Ian
-
Try using very thin plastic card same shape as the windows outlining the shape and cut with a sharp knife the frame then spray with silver paint and glue on the lexan. Just idea
-
Good idea. I will try that on test piece.
Cheers
Ian
-
you could try useing lithoplate, stick it to the lexen flat then it will bend when you bend the windscreen to shape.
-
Meanwhile, I have done a bit on the cockpit, all loose fitted at the moment.
I think I may have solved the windscreen issue with a little help from another member, I have ordered some car body work trim that appears to be the right size, so, fingers crossed!
Ian
-
Looking good with all that wood work!
-
Today has been productive.
I fitted the wooden handrails and made and fitted the pushpit and pullpit rails. These are made of 3mm stainless soft soldered together.
Ian
-
Got to say, it's looking outstanding so far!!!
Patience, attention to detail, will pay off in due course!
Garry
-
Had a good day at it today.
Windows tinted and fitted, windscreen fitted and finished off with car body trim and painted plasticard, bollards and cleats made, so, not much left now.
-
Hi Mate

Looks good, never thought to try using that sort of thing!
How did you fit the screen to the boat? It's hard to tell from the pics
-
I cut a slot in the cabin top for the lexan to fit into and glued it from the underside with canopy glue. Seems to have worked ok.

That looks the puppy's privates.....I have an unstarted 49" fibreglass huntsman kit in the garage, this refurbishment blog has given me a insight of how good mine could be...one day!
-
Last little jobs done today, and its finished!
Weather permitting first outing on Sunday.
Before and after pics shown:

I've been following this thread with interest. I'm now pretty convinced that I have a fibreglass Huntsman hull in the garage ("Hello, hello, what have we here then?)
If that's the case, I feel a project coming on. %%
Anyone agree with my guess on the hull?

Great rebuild, and looks to be nippy on the water. What motor, prop and battery set- up have you used?
Chris

I have read this thread with great interest and I think that you have done a briiliant job on this craft. I am slowly getting my aged huntsman back into shape for the water but I am having trouble sorting out the pushpit and pullpit rails. I have absolutely not got any engineering or soldering skills. Does anybody have any contacts or suppliers that I can get in touch with ? all help gratefully received
-
Great refurb, and great work planking the top deck and detailing, what type of wood did you use?.
-
The motor is an inrunner 35mm dia 75mm long and 1500kv running 4s lilpo and 40mm prop.
The deck wood is lime re cycled from ikea blinds.

:} nothing wrong with abit of recycling, it turned out great in the end,+ saves you having to saw it down yourself.always good to keep a little stash of recycled rosewood or something for them jobs, :-))
-
That boat looks simply sublime!!
Well done with the refurbishment!!!
Garry

After a bit ( well a lot really) of enjoyment playing with the Huntsman, I thought it was time to add a few extras.
I have made a mast, ventilators, a boat hook and a winch.
Also added a flagstaff at the stern, flags, Fairey emblems and a name.
Ian
-
And one showing the mast
-
Beautiful example of a Huntsman they sure do run well, cracking job :-))
