Title: Russian Super Torpedo
Post by: Colin Bishop on November 12, 2015, 04:10:22 pm
An apparent 'leak' from Russian TV.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-34797252

A bit of an advance on the Japanese 'Long Lance'! It seems to be more like an underwater cruise missile. You wouldn't want one of these up your creek!

well its one way of avoiding the protective shield that the west has put up to protect against ballistic missiles. What sort of power plant would give a range of over 6000 miles at over 100 knots though....magic fairy dust?!
I make no claims to be an engineer :}

Lost in translation I imagine, must have enough range for the firing sub to get away though.

Mad, there should be revolts against goverments all over the world that perpetrate this crap, although nuclear bombs are a deter ant, some day, and idiot will get hold of one, and use it,  this torpedo idiocy just makes the world just that bit more dangerous,  the world is moving toward war, very quickly

It could also be bluff and counter bluff! If the state didn't want it shown on tv then it would not have been shown. It probably only exists on paper, but that in itself via a deliberate leak is enough to get the 'opposition' war machine into full swing developing counter measures. Measures that will cost millions to develop where no such threat actually exists.

I don't get it.

Water is an excellent neutron absorber so how would this kill by radiation?
Lots of bombs have been set off underwater so the effects are pretty well known.
The contamination scare is rubbish too - the sea is massive and most heavy elements would be lost in the silt on the bottom when everything settles.

This is basically an underwater ICBM - nothing new or amazing - apart from being unbelievably,  spectacularly expensive to build.
It would be pretty obvious who would have set it off as there wouldn't be many built - even if it were true.

Looking at the 'leaked' plan I still don't think there is enough detailed information to build a 1/96 scale working model of one.  Will 40MHz still work at that scale range?  Can I get Cobalt 49 on Flea-Bay?  Will my local Council object to me using it amongst our lake's wildlife?  Sounds a tall order to me.

40MHz???
Might need a steerable log periodic aerial

It wouldn't look very interesting either.

When I worked on the Clyde in the late 1970's, I was reliably informed that the Mk24 long torpedo when not connected to a controlling wire was capable of 70/75 knots, but alas not that sort of range.

running at 1000m depth would mean virtually silent up to 25knots maybe more ( water pressure stops cavitation ) but having more than a hundred miles range would be almost impossible , as its a 100MT warhead they claim if it was detonated at 1000m depth right above an unstable underwater slope off the US east coast it would cause a huge underwater landslide causing a huge tidal wave , not a practical weapon so I'd guess just something put together to try and force the US to spend money

IIRC, this 'super torpedo' has made the news about once per decade since the 1990's. Still nothing concrete as to whether it even exists. - Tom

Totally pointless. Why not just bung your dirty bomb in a shipping container, and let an independent carrier take it where you want?

Andy. Maybe too close to reality.

Looking at the plan looks like its powered by one Duracell battery ..Bill........
